Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008: Two more top hockey teams suffer weekend losses
Leading off today: Tim Ross scored his second goal of the game 14:11 into the second period to help lift Liverpool to a 4-3 victory over Potsdam, ranked No. 1 in Division I hockey by the New York State Sportwsriters Association.

Josh LaRose also scored twice, and Dan Cibelli assisted on all four goals for Liverpool (8-6-2). Nick Miller scored twice for Potsdam (13-1).

Queensbury, ranked No. 2 in Division II, also stumbled on Saturday. Troy LaSalle (9-6-2), playing its third game in four days, scored twice in the third period and rode Brendan Wagner's 31 saves to a 2-0 win.

Queensbury, which was in line to ascend to the top spot in the state following Canandaigua's loss to Irondequoit on Friday, is 14-1-1.

Indoor track notes: Carmel's Kristin Reese ran a 4:52.65 mile to set a Section 1 record and a national season's best at the New Balance Games at the New Balance Armory, clinching her third straight trip to the Millrose Games.

Shenendehowa's Ryan Jones ran the No. 3 time in the nation for 800 meters at the Yale Invitational, covering the distance is 1:55.22, nearly three seconds better than his week-old PR. He also anchored the 3,200 relay to a win in 8:00.08.

National Federation supports ruling: The National Federation of State High School Association says meet officials in Maryland correctly applied the rule last weekend that resulted in Washington, D.C., runner Juashuanna Kelly not competing. Kelly was told by Montgomery Invitational meet officials that she would need to replace her undergarment because it violated rules published by the National Federation.

"[M]eet officials at the Montgomery Invitational checked uniforms prior to the events to make sure they complied with NFHS uniform rules," the National Federation said in a statement. "Since Kelly's one-piece undergarment was multi-colored (blue, orange, white), it was in violation of the uniform rules. The meet officials did not disqualify Kelly; they informed her she would have to replace the multi-colored undergarment with a single-colored undergarment, an option which she declined and, thus, did not compete.

"The head covering, which was a part of Kelly's one-piece undergarment, nor the length of the undergarment were in violation of NFHS rules. She could have worn the same style of undergarment, with a head covering, as long as the undergarment was one color throughout the entire piece of clothing. The NFHS track uniform rule was put in place for consistency across the board and for ease in identifying runners at the finish line. Multi-colored undergarments cause greater identification problems for track officials."

Niagara Falls triumphs: Niagara Falls sprinted to a 26-11 lead and went on to beat Buffalo Grover Cleveland, 72-60, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Challenge.

Niagara Falls is the No. 9 Class AA boys basketball team in the NYSSWA rankings. Grover Cleveland is third in Class A. Niagara Falls hasn’t lost since dropping its opener to Syracuse Henninger in overtime,

Kelvin Agee added 17 points for Niagara Falls. Anthony Greene had 24 points to lead Grover Cleveland.

Examing youth coaches: The Democrat and Chronicle did a piece this morning pointing out that training and certification of youth coaches is all over the spectrum, possibly leaving the door open to abuse of young athletes and injuries.

There are no minimum requirements to become a youth sports coach in New York state. The Positive Coaching Alliance in Palo Alto, Calif., estimates there are 4 million volunteer coaches across the country.

No varsity football for Holland: Football boosters in Holland learned last week that the school district will not begin funding a varsity program next fall according to the East Aurora Advertiser.

The story is a bit of a "he said, she said" affair, but it also provides a little bit of insight into some of the dynamics of the situation, with finances and facilities the key questions but an underlying desire to protect the soccer program perhaps also a consideration.

The paper said football supporters may have funding lined up to cover almost all expenses for the first 13 years of the program. If that's actually the case, it's almost stunning that the school board declined to go forward with starting up the program given the amount of discussion there's been about the subjest for the last two years.

Pictures show up on adult site: Several gay adult Web sites have posted photographs of teenage water polo players from high schools in Southern California, the Orange County Register reported.

Pictures of boys as young as 14 were displayed next to photos of nude young men and graphic sexual content, the paper reported. Parents said some of the boys were traumatized and sought counseling.

"For someone to come in and take what these kids are doing and take it out of context and exploit these images, these kids and their schools, because you can see the school name on the caps, is just horrible," said Joan Gould, spokeswoman for a group of parents.

Police at Cal-Irvine confirmed they are investigating whether a campus police dispatcher had photographed the athletes. The man has not been charged; it was not clear if posting the pictures was illegal.

The paper found photos of players from 11 Orange County high schools on one gay porn site registered to a London address. Photos were also posted on other sites, the paper said.

Extra points: The New York Daily News checked in on Christ The King's girls this week to examine why the Royals are struggling at 6-5 midway through the season. As expected, transfers and injuries have taken a toll on the Royals. . . . Shannon Seager scored 21 points to lift Waverly to a 61-54 overtime victory against Elmira Notre Dame in girls basketball on Friday. Notre Dame is ranked No. 1 in Class B and Waverly 11th in Class A according to the NYSSWA. . . . Frank Brown is the new varsity football coach at Wellsville. He was defensive coordinator there for three seasons. Wellsville was 0-8 last fall, running its losing streak to 15 games.
