Monday, Jan. 21, 2008: No. 6 Maginn posts solid win over White Plains
Leading off today: Albany's Bishop Maginn positioned itself as a serious contender for a state Class AA boys basketball championship by beating White Plains, 71-50, yesterday at Siena College.

Maginn is ranked sixth and White Plains 21st in the Class AA ratings by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Maginn (14-1) forced White Plains into 26 turnovers. Taran Buie led the way with 20 points, Terron Victoria scored 15 and guard Bunduka Kargbo chipped in with 10 points, five assists and four steals. Victoria was 5-for-6 from the field as Maginn shot better than 50 percent as a team.

In a big Class A card on the same Coaches vs. Cancer card, No. 1 Peekskill, three-time defending state champ, fought off No. 11 Albany Academy, 62-58.

Peekskill went on a 13-5 run over the final three minutes. Mookie Jones led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds, and Elliot Watson posted 14 points and 10 boards.

High-interest topic: The weekend story by The New

York Post on the Suffern situation (see Saturday's blog) is getting a lot of attention and chatter.

If you want evidence, just go to LoHud.com and check out Harold Gutmann's blog. He wrote a brief entry Saturday afternoon in which he reported that a reliable source assures him no Suffern hockey players were involved in the mess.

As of 11 a.m. today, there were more than 160 reader comments tacked onto the entry, which is an insane level of reaction to any blog. Much larger papers writing about even hotter topics are often lucky to get half that number of responses.

Indoor track: New Rochelle won the Westchester County Track and Field Championships title for the 17th time in 18 years yesterday at The Armory. Elizabeth Mott won the 55-meter hurdles hurdles and 300 dash and placed third in the high jump. teammate Aisha Chisholm won the triple jump and took second in the long jump.

Tiny Bronxville tied for third in the team standings and got stellar individual efforts from seniors Emma Clarke (3:04.7 in the 1,000) and Tori Flannery (4:49.9 in the 1,500).
