Leading off today: Walter Moseley, the NYSSWA's small-school football player of the year in 1982, died yesterday after suffering a heart attack in St. Augustine, Fla. He was 42.
Moseley's sister, Cynthia Moseley-McNeil, told The Times Herald-Record that he suffered a minor heart attack as a senior at Syracuse University more than two decades ago but had been healthy since. Officials from the Polk Regional Juvenile Center, where Moseley worked, called yesterday afternoon to tell her that her brother had been rushed to a hospital and was unconscious.
Ellenville retired Moseley's number at the conclusion of his senior season.
"He set the standard," Ellenville coach Tony Borriello told the paper. "Everyone knows about Walter. This is a tough one."
Moseley left high school as the state's career leader in rushing (5,594), points (492), touchdowns (79) and 100-yard rushing games (34) in an era when 10-game seasons were the norm because the state playoffs had not yet been approved. Moseley also set single-season records for touchdowns (34) and rushing yardage (2,066).
In college, Moseley played sparingly at Syracuse, rushing just 59 times for 233 yards in his career.
