Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008: Ellenville football great Moseley dies in Florida at age of 42
Leading off today: Walter Moseley, the NYSSWA's small-school football player of the year in 1982, died yesterday after suffering a heart attack in St. Augustine, Fla. He was 42.

Moseley's sister, Cynthia Moseley-McNeil, told The Times Herald-Record that he suffered a minor heart attack as a senior at Syracuse University more than two decades ago but had been healthy since. Officials from the Polk Regional Juvenile Center, where Moseley worked, called yesterday afternoon to tell her that her brother had been rushed to a hospital and was unconscious.

Ellenville retired Moseley's number at the conclusion of his senior season.

"He set the standard," Ellenville coach Tony Borriello told the paper. "Everyone knows about Walter. This is a tough one."

Moseley left high school as the state's career leader in rushing (5,594), points (492), touchdowns (79) and 100-yard rushing games (34) in an era when 10-game seasons were the norm because the state playoffs had not yet been approved. Moseley also set single-season records for touchdowns (34) and rushing yardage (2,066).

In college, Moseley played sparingly at Syracuse, rushing just 59 times for 233 yards in his career.

Szkotak reaches 2,000: New York Mills senior Samantha Szkotak made senior night against Cincinnatus memorable as she recorded her 2,000th career point during a 75-24 rout. She scored 22 points in the game to end the night exactly at 2,000.

Wrestling coach disciplined: Fifth-year wrestling Coach Peter Maliarakis of Bryant High in Queens was dismissed because of comments after a controversial loss in mid-January.

Maliarakis, 29, also lost his girls soccer coaching positiom as a result of Principal Chris Pellettieri's decision, The Daily News reported. Pellettieri was reacting to comments Maliarakis made to a Daily News intern covering the Jan. 17 match, but he said the published remarks were not the only factor.

In the story, Maliarakis complained after one of his wrestlers was disqualified for an illegal slam on a female opponent. During injury time, the Curtis wrestler conferred with coach Chris Alena and told the referee that she could not continue. The match was declared a forfeit and Curtis was awarded six points en route to winning the meet.

Maliarakis alleged that Alena had convinced his wrestler to quit, calling the tactic "a little strategy that scumbag coaches use."

Maliarakis declined to discuss his dismissal, but said he was quoted accurately in the story.

More from Buffalo: Jayvonna Kincannon returned to classes at McKinley High in Buffalo and rejoined the girls basketball team without having to issue an apology (worked out through Buffalo Youth Court on Saturday) to Principal Crystal Barton because Barton was in Albany on unrelated school business and because Kincannon decided not to do so.

"We were not making an apology," familt attorney Loren D. Lobban told The Buffalo News.

In other developments, Catherine Nugent Panepinto urged fellow members on the Buffalo Board of Education on Monday to refer an investigation to the School Board’s Ethics Committee and an associate superintendent for the district's educational services said the Buffalo Public Schools were not in violation of two state education laws when they hit Kincannon with a seven-week suspension for seemingly minor infractions.
