Saturday, March 29, 2008: L.I. Lutheran, Jamesville-DeWitt advance to Class A final
Leading off today: Long Island Lutheran, coming off a three-week wait between games, scored a 77-66 victory over Bishop Ford yesterday to move into the boys Class A final against Jamesville-DeWitt in the Federation basketball tournament at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Crusaders got 28 points and eight rebounds from senior Jeriel Henriquez, who was 5-for-11 on 3-pointers. That offset the work of Bishop Ford's Chaz Williams, who scored 26 points.

Bishop Ford, which held a 45-24 advantage in rebounds, led by 56-47 late in the third quarter, but Kevin Johnson's layup to end the period started an 18-6 run for Long Island Lutheran. Johnson was 10-for-11 on free throws and finished with 22 points.

Jamesville-DeWitt advanced by means of a 66-49 win against Transit Tech. The Red Rams committed 20 turnovers and shot just 40 percent.

"It was kind of a boring game, to be honest," said junior Brandon Triche, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. "We won, but against any other team we would have lost this game."

Boys Class B semifinals: Collegiate senior Mike Nelson made 9 of 11 shots during a 20-point performance to spark a 59-46 victory over Olean, which saw its 23-game winning streak end. Junior Harrison Green scored 12 points, sophomore Bartlett had 12 points and eight rebounds and junior Christian Fisch added 10 points in the win.

Collegiate will take on CHSAA representative St. Agnes, a school located about three blocks away in Manhattan, in tonight’s final. St. Agnes (22-9) advanced with a 55-51 win over Secondary School for Law, Journalism and Research, from New York City’s PSAL.

Girls semifinals: Briarcliff sliced up Fieldston School with a 20-point first quarter and advanced to the Class A final with a 64-37 victory.

The all-star trio of Taylor Pescetti, Shelby Coon and Maggie Blair combined for 50 points to lead Briarcliff to today's final against Academy of American Studies from the PSAL.

Briarcliff held a 49-24 rebounding advantage, led by Coon's 20 boards.

In Class A, Christ The King eliminated Staten Island Curtis, 65-50, as Jael Pena, playing with a sinus infection, scored a game-high 23 points. The Lady Royals will face Malone Franklin Academy for the championship.

  •    Following the Fed finals action online: The Post-Star in Glens Falls, which chronicles New York's scholastic basketball championships like no other paper on the planet for two weekends each March, has a Web page available with plenty of additional info on the Federation tournament.

That includes in-progress reporting on the games, shot charts and photo galleries. It's a nice complement to the work that makes the paper a mortal lock each year when the APSE awards are announced.

Coach praised: Paul Robeson basketball and baseball coach Todd Myles helped save the life of an honors student after the boy was stabbed repeatedly inside the school.

Kyle Owens, 18, was walking out of the cafeteria when he was jumped and knifed in the neck and abdomen about 12:30 p.m. yesterday, police sources said. Myles rushed to revive Owens before emergency crews arrived, according to the teen's mother.

"His coach saved my son," Kina Owens told The Daily News. "He gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."

Myles stayed with the teen's family at Kings County Hospital as police searched for the attacker. No arrests were made.

Myles thanked Kina Owens for her "good words," but said, "I just did what you're supposed to do. I'm a basketball coach, a baseball coach and a teacher. I would have done what I did for anyone."

LaSalle names coach: Steve Sgambelluri, a star player for Bishop Maginn and The College of Saint Rose, was named the new boys basketball coach at La Salle Institute in Troy, sources told The Times Union.

Sgambelluri was chosen over Mike Beadnell, LaSalle's JV coach who took over when coach Sean Brown resigned in January.

Sgambelluri coached one varsity season at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in 2002-03. He has also served as an assistant coach at Saint Rose.
