Friday, March 28, 2008: School board member proposes shutting down Bridgehampton High
Leading off today: Could the end be in sight for Bridgehampton High School, which captured eight NYSPHSAA boys basketball championships from 1978 to 1998?

Bridgehampton School Board member Joseph Berhalter has filed a petition asking voters to decide whether the high school should be closed. The matter is likely to be discussed at Monday's board of education workshop and could, in theory, end up as a ballot referendum May 20 when the annual school budget will come up for a vote.

Signed by 30 people, five more than needed, the petition calls for phasing out the high school over a four-year period and sending students in grades 9-12 to nearby schools on a tuition basis; with just 49 students currently enrolled in the high school, average spending per student is approximately $41,000, according to Hamptons.com.

Two Geneva athletes stabbed: Two Geneva High football and basketball players were stabbed late Thursday during a fight, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Geneva police were called around 11:35 p.m., after an altercation on a city street. Seniors Jeremiah Allen and John Archibald, both 18, were injured during the incident, officers said. The two were taken to Geneva General Hospital, and then transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Allen was listed in guarded condition in intensive care and Archibald was still bei treated in the hospital’s emergency room early today.

"They are both really good kids," said District Superintendent Bob Young. "It’s important to recognize that John and Jeremiah are the victims here."

Young said the students were at a party when some "undesirable people" showed up. A fight ensued and they were injured.

RCSS coach accused: Rockville Centre South Side assistant football coach Anthony Bruno was arrested and charged yesterday in a theft of approximately $500 Wednesday from the coaches' office, Newsday reported.

  •    The money had apparently been collected for baseball hats for the JV team. Nassau County Police said Bruno staged a burglary to cover up the theft. They charged Bruno with petit larceny, fourth-degree criminal mischief and with filing a false written statement, the paper said.

AD Michael Heller said Friday that Bruno, 24, who was an assistant football coach and the co-coach of the varsity baseball team, has been terminated.

"It's very sad," Heller said. "He comes from a great family in town. He's respected. He played ball for us . . . It's a shock. You don't know what goes through someone's mind, why they do it. It's sad."

Bruno is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on April 7.

Coach denies rape charge: A Hudson Falls High teacher and coach entered a plea of not guilty this morning in the alleged rape of a teenage student, WNYT-TV reported.

Kason O'Neil, 26, a phys ed teacher and varsity track coach, entered the plea in Washington County Court, where he faced a 21-count indictment accusing him of having sex with a then-14-year-old student in 2005 and 2006.

O'Neil's attorney, Terry Kindlon of Albany, said the indictment is riddled with errors and the charges won't stick. "If I were a law school professor, I'd flunk the person who put it together. It's got a lot of stuff in it it really doesn't need," he said.

The girl who, was too young to legally consent, told police they had sex 20 times on school grounds.

O'Neil is free on bail. The school district has placed him on administrative leave.
