Sunday, March 30, 2008: Lincoln advances to Federation final showdown with Holy Cross
Leading off today: I'll keep today's blog entry mercifully short as I recap the next-to-last day of the high school winter sports season.

Junior Lance Stephenson scored 15 points and PSAL champion Abraham Lincoln moved into the Federation boys basketball tournament Class AA final with a 67-57 victory over Bishop Maginn. The Railsplitters will play Holy Cross, the CHSAA representative, in today's final.

Maginn made a run to pull within three points midway through the fourth quarter before Lincoln pulled away. Justin Greene and James Padgett scored 22 and 14 points, respectively, for the winners.

Girls finals: Christ the King beat Malone Franklin, 70-63, for the Class A championship as freshman Bria Smith generated 21 of her game-high 32 points in the second half, including 16 in the third quarter. Jael Pena had 15 points and Geleisa George 14 for CTK to offset 27 points by Hayley Poupore.

In Class B, Briarcliff downed American Studies, 61-49, as tournament MVP Maggie Blair scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Shelby Coon led the winners with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Boys finals: Jamesville-DeWitt took the Class A crown with a 70-66 win over Long Island Lutheran as junior Brandon Triche poured in 29 points, including a 13-of-14 performance from the line. Nick Pascale added 13 points in the win, and Jeriel Henriquez topped Long Island Lutheran with 26 points.

  •    Tournament MVP Mike Nelson recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds as Collegiate beat Manhattan neighbor St. Agnes, 57-44, in Class B. Christian Fisch added 13 points and three assists. Matthew Wafula had 20 points for St. Agnes.

Bergtraum breezes: Syracuse University recruit Shakeya Leary managed only six points due to foul trouble, but three Murry Bergtraum teammates reached double figures in a 67-34 rout of Rush-Henrietta in the girls Class AA semifinal at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Bergtraum led only by 30-25 at the half before blowing the game open for its 52nd consecutive victory.

Shenise Johnson, a three-time All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year, scored 17 points for Rush-Henrietta to finish her career with 2,241 points.

New inductees: Joe Loudis, 65, described the honor as the highlight of his life. The former Cohoes and Mechanicville mentor was one of nine inductees into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday.

Loudis was honored along with Vincent Cannizzaro, Warren Fuller, Jim Gatto, Dick Harvey, John Lauro, John Meehan, Ken Thomas and Michele Tidick.
