Thirty-two players on New Jersey's 52-man roster have Division I scholarships, as opposed to six from New York according to Newsday's math.
Lansingburgh tailback Kenny Youngs scored on a one-yard run midway through the second quarter to cut New Jersey's lead to 14-6, and St. Anthony's Daniel Basil ran in the two-point conversion. The winners stretched in to 26-8 before New Rochelle's Markell Rice (Ray's brother) turned in a 79-yard interception and Youngs ran in the conversion.
New Jersey responded with an eight-play, 53-yard drive capped by a 2-yard run by William Washington that extended its lead to 33-16. Jeff Legree of Fort Hamilton then threw a 35-yard touchdown pass with 5:58 left for the final points.
DWI arrest: Mike Mezansky, a former Mamaroneck baseball star, has been charged with driving while intoxicated in a crash that left a 9-year-old boy critically injured. Mezansky, 18, allegedly steered around a Bee-Line bus and struck a neighborhood boy, William Powers, who was crossing the street at 7:45 a.m. Friday, The Journal News reported.
Powers is at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla and had been breathing with the help of a ventillator before regaining consciousness yesterday. He suffered a head injury, two broken legs and bruised lungs, the paper reported.
Mezansky, who attends Indiana University, graduated in 2007 after hitting .438 with four home runs and 38 RBI to earn League 1-A player of the year honors. He was also a goalie for the school's soccer team.
