Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008: William Floyd snuffs out late threat to preserve victory
Leading off today: The William Floyd defense held Lindenhurst out of the end zone on four incomplete passes from the 15-yard-line to preserve a 14-12 victory last night on a muddy Lincoln Field in Mastic.

The victory extended Floyd's Long Island-record football winning streak to 34 games and their home streak to 37. It was the closest game the Colonials have played during their streak.

Lindenhurst gained possession at its 43 late in the fourth quarter, and sophomore QB Stephen Skon threw four completions to move the ball to the 15.

"We were out of timeouts and we had to throw, and we just missed on the last one. We had a guy open," Lindenhurst coach Rich Biancaniello told Newsday. "I'm so proud of my guys, you wouldn't believe it. If this is the best team in the division, we're pretty darn close."

Floyd assembled a 14-play, 92-yard drive in the second quarter, capped by Steven Murphy's four-yard throw to Jesse Kelly and a two-point conversion run by Kevin Lacey to make it 14-6.

Coaching with a heavy heart: Mike D'Aloisio had much more on his mind than football last night. D'Aloisio's mother, Josephine, died three hours before Notre Dame downed Candor, 36-7.

"She wanted me to be here. She said to make sure I don't miss the game," D'Aloisio told The Star-Gazette. "She used to listen to the games on the radio. Tonight she's listening from heaven's gate."

Mike Huffner rushed for three TDs and the first half and finished with 15 carries for 110 yards, and Matt Buice chipped in with 93 yards on 14 carries.

Friday's rapid recap: Senior Nick Finger rushed 30 times for 337 yards and four touchdowns as Millbrook beat Spackenkill, 44-27. The Blazers broke open a 24-20 game in the third quarter on TD runs of 10 and 46 yards by Finger. Millbrook's D.J. Cummings opened the contest with an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Saratoga held a pregame ceremony to honor Ed Loomis, who would have been a senior defensive lineman for the Blue Streaks this season but was killed in a June accident, then routed Bethlehem, 41-0, by gaining 304 yards on the ground. Tony Deloatch carried 14 times and 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Ethan Tilebein got Groton started with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and then added 19 carries for 178 yards and two more scores to down Moravia, 42-19. Kyle Reed added two scoring runs and finished with 93 yards on just six carries to go with four sacks on defense.

Donald Exner rushed 22 times for 258 yards and two TDs to lift Ellenville to a 34-8 victory over Tri-Valley. The Blue Devils ran 45 times for 461 yards, with Eric Thayer adding

Senior Casey Vogl ran for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries as Aquinas overcame a 14-0 deficit to earn a 35-20 victory over St. Francis of Athol Springs. The Little Irish rushed for 265 yards, including 144 in the fourth quarter.

Mike Belluzzi ran 27 times for for 197 yards and three scores, and the John Jay defense held Ramapo to under 100 yards of total offense during a 28-0 victory. Ramapo was coming off an impressive 31-19 triumph against North Rockland.

John Ronayne kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:11 left to give Frontier a 16-14 win vs. Lancaster, which had taken the lead on Frank Gregori's one-yard run to start the fourth quarter.

Fonda-Fultonville fallout: Several Fonda-Fultonville students charged by Montgomery County Sheriff's Wednesday in connection to a recent string of crimes have been suspended from sports teams for part of the fall season, The Leader-Herald reported today.

Superintendent James Hoffman said about 11 students agreed to accept their punishment for possibly violating the school district's "code of conduct" policy. The students, including members of the varsity football, soccer and cross country teams, will miss half of the games scheduled this season, he said.

Thirteen arrests on a variety of misdemeanor and felony charges were made in connection with numerous burglaries, thefts from cars and acts of criminal mischief reported in the eastern half of the county over the past month. A variety of misdemeanor and felony charges were issued by the sheriff's office.

While the students' cases are pending, administrators gave them a chance to start serving their school penalties now, Hoffman said. The paper reported four of those arrested play football and one is on the soccer team.

"We've seen similar incidents like this, but we've never seen this number of kids involved," Montgomery County Undersheriff Jeffery Smith said. "They've committed so many crimes over such a large geographical area, they don't know. They just can't tell us."

Extra points: Senior Nikki O'Dell scored five goals, including four in the first half, to lead the Arlington girls soccer team to a 6-0 win vs. Lincoln. Two O'Dell goals contributed to a 3-0 lead in the game's first four minutes.
