Leading off today: The William Floyd defense held Lindenhurst out of the end zone on four incomplete passes from the 15-yard-line to preserve a 14-12 victory last night on a muddy Lincoln Field in Mastic.
The victory extended Floyd's Long Island-record football winning streak to 34 games and their home streak to 37. It was the closest game the Colonials have played during their streak.
Lindenhurst gained possession at its 43 late in the fourth quarter, and sophomore QB Stephen Skon threw four completions to move the ball to the 15.
"We were out of timeouts and we had to throw, and we just missed on the last one. We had a guy open," Lindenhurst coach Rich Biancaniello told Newsday. "I'm so proud of my guys, you wouldn't believe it. If this is the best team in the division, we're pretty darn close."
Floyd assembled a 14-play, 92-yard drive in the second quarter, capped by Steven Murphy's four-yard throw to Jesse Kelly and a two-point conversion run by Kevin Lacey to make it 14-6.
Coaching with a heavy heart: Mike D'Aloisio had much more on his mind than football last night. D'Aloisio's mother, Josephine, died three hours before Notre Dame downed Candor, 36-7.
"She wanted me to be here. She said to make sure I don't miss the game," D'Aloisio told The Star-Gazette. "She used to listen to the games on the radio. Tonight she's listening from heaven's gate."
Mike Huffner rushed for three TDs and the first half and finished with 15 carries for 110 yards, and Matt Buice chipped in with 93 yards on 14 carries.
Friday's rapid recap: Senior Nick Finger rushed 30 times for 337 yards and four touchdowns as Millbrook beat Spackenkill, 44-27. The Blazers broke open a 24-20 game in the third quarter on TD runs of 10 and 46 yards by Finger. Millbrook's D.J. Cummings opened the contest with an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Saratoga held a pregame ceremony to honor Ed Loomis, who would have been a senior defensive lineman for the Blue Streaks this season but was killed in a June accident, then routed Bethlehem, 41-0, by gaining 304 yards on the ground. Tony Deloatch carried 14 times and 118 yards and two touchdowns.
Ethan Tilebein got Groton started with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and then added 19 carries for 178 yards and two more scores to down Moravia, 42-19. Kyle Reed added two scoring runs and finished with 93 yards on just six carries to go with four sacks on defense.
Donald Exner rushed 22 times for 258 yards and two TDs to lift Ellenville to a 34-8 victory over Tri-Valley. The Blue Devils ran 45 times for 461 yards, with Eric Thayer adding
