Friday, Sept. 12, 2008: The misery just keeps on growing for Liverpool football
Leading off today: As the saying goes, if it weren't for bad luck, Liverpool football wouldn't have any luck at all.

So far this year, the Warriors have been thrown out of their own stadium because the field was declared unsafe, had players suspended for an altercation during their season-opening win and have has the aforementioned season-opening win called into question due to the use of an ineligible player. We're not even halfway through September, and you can tell that coach Dave Mancuso is not exactly having a fun time.

"When people ask me about our football team, all they really want to talk about is the fact we don't have an operational stadium," Mancuso told The Post-Standard. "Nobody asks me how good our football team is. I'll tell you, I'm getting tired of talking about the stadium."

Instead, he's been spending a portion of this week talking to school and league officials about the use of an ineligible, 19-year-old player who had transferred to Liverpool last fall from a private school and was recently found to be too old to compete during his senior year.

The athlete played extensively in the 32-12 victory against Baldwinsville, making a forfeit likely.

"Boy, are we snakebit, or what?" said Mancuso, who took responsibility for the glitch. "First, we have no stadium to play in. Then, we get involved in a fight in our first game and get three players suspended for this week. Now, we find out we've got an ineligible player. What next?"

Three players from Liverpool and two from Baldwinsville have been suspended for at least a portion of games this weekend as a result of an altercation last Friday. According to the paper, tempers flared in the third quarter after Baldwinsville tailback Malik Burks was tackled out of bounds by Liverpool lineman Dee Harris. Players from both teams jostled on the Liverpool sideline before being separated, and it took almost 15 minutes to restore order.

Two-way end Corey Bundrage, WR/DB Justin Albro and RB/DB Ken Howard will sit out tonight's game against Syracuse Corcoran. Baldwinsville will sit Burks for the first half of tonight's game at CBA (1-0). Another unidentified player will also be held out.

Two Section 5 coaches sacked: Two long-time Section 5 coaches recently found out they were not being reappointed to their positions this school year.

Veteran teacher Tim Munn is out as boys basketball coach at Red Jacket this school year, and Pittsford Mendon girls soccer coach Janet Wright also has did not gain reappointment.

  •    "Of course my feelings are tremendously hurt because I feel I've given quite a bit of commitment to this community," Munn told WHEC-TV.

Munn said he believes issues of playing time for certain athletes could have been behind his dismissal. "It's supposed to be about talent, I think," he said.

A recent school board meeting drew a large crowd in support on Munn, who also coaches track and field. The school board overruled the recommendation of the superintendent in refusing to reappoint him.

Wright had coached the Mendon varsity since Brenda Gibson retired after the 1990 season but was replaced this fall by Eric Pritchard. Her final game was a 4-2 loss to Rockville Centre Southside last Novermber in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A final, and she was informed of the decision in January.

"I was shocked," Wright told the Messenger Post Newspapers. "I have received nothing but high regard for our program since I have been there. For me and the way I ran our program, it was always about more than soccer. We wanted to carry themselves in high regard on the field, the classroom and in life."

Wright has interviewed for a pair of AD positions and is not ruling out coaching elsewhere.

"I love the game, I love the sport,” Wright told the paper. "I don’t want to give up working with kids. It is a passion that is never ending."

Wantagh update: Fundraisers in Wantagh presented their school board with a $150,944 check Thursday in a continuing effort to save student sports and activities canceled last spring after voters rejected the proposed shool budget.

The latest payment assures the restoration of winter JV sports and 14 other clubs and activities. It's estimated they need to raise another $100,000 to $125,000 for the remaining sports and activities by mid-March.

Extra points: Honeoye Falls-Lima soccer player Melissa Plain, who had been in guarded condition after a Sept. 3 car crash, was released from Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester on Wednesday. Plain, 17, was driving to school just before 7:30 a.m. when she swerved and hit a utility pole.
