Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008: Henninger rallies past F-M with huge fourth quarter
Leading off today: Greg Spears rushed 24 times for 247 yards and scored four touchdowns as Syracuse Henninger defeated Fayetteville-Manlius in football, 38-27, with a 24-point fourth quarter.

Spears scored on runs of 83 and 21 yards in the fourth period to complete the rally from a 20-14 deficit for Henninger, which was successful on four two-point conversions in the contest. F-M's Matt Taylor ran 24 times for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Third time's the charm: Steve Ciulla's 27-yard field goal with no time remaining gave Mechanicville the 3-0 victory over Corinth.

Ciulla's kick came on the third attempt of the sequence. The first unsuccessful attempt was negated by a penalty for running into the kicker, and a second miss was wiped out by a defensive holding call.

The teams combined for just 27 yards through the air, and C.J. Saunders of Corinth led rushers with just 45 yards.

Central Islip wins in triple-OT: Zach Crespo threw 20 yards to Kadeem Barnes for a TD in the third overtime, carrying Central Islip past Commack, 34-26. Dondre Bailey recovered a fumble on Commack's ensuing possession to seal the victory.

Commack's bid to win in regulation ended on a Jamel Herron interception in the end zone with under a minute left.

Crespo was 20-of-29 for 215 yards and four touchdowns, and Barnes caught eight passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

St. Anthony's rebounds: St. Anthony's rallied from a 14-7 deficit in the first quarter to swamp Delbarton (N.J.), 52-14. The Friars had opened with a 7-6 loss at nationally ranked Philadelphia St. Joseph Prep.

Junior Tom Schreiber overcame an early interception to throw two touchdowns and senior Atiq Lucas scored three times for the Friars. Lucas' first score was an 84-yard kickoff return to tie the score at 7. Schreiber found Lucas for a 69-yard pass-and-catch for a 28-14 lead with 7:58 left in the first half.

Saturday's rapid recap: Cazenovia, 22-2 since the start of the 2006 season, routed Sauquoit Valley, 60-0, by piling up 483 yards of total offense. Chad Dorrance carried four times for 84 yards and two TDs and QB Carter Franz went 4-for-5 for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Beaver River outlasted Bishop Grimes, 42-36, as Luke Turck scored four touchdowns, including the winner in overtime. Turck scored on a three-yard run to start the OT, and Beaver River then closed it out with an interception on Grimes' possession.

Running backs Devin White (12 carries, 154 yards) and Omar Osbourne (10 carries, 93 yards) combined for five TDs as defending NYSPHSAA Class C champion Bishop Ludden rolled past Lafayette, 50-6.

Jason Washington made two interceptions and seven tackles as Patchogue-Medford edged Brentwood, 21-14. His second pick went 35 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead. Andrew Silva carried 19 times for 131 yards and a touchdown.

  •    Tom Hammond's interception with :20 to play clinched Hudson Falls' 14-13 triumph against Albany Academy. The Cadets pulled to within 14-13 with 2:17 to go, but Hudson Falls senior Joe Buonviaggio tipped the extra-point attempt and the ball fell short of the uprights. Senior Joe McMurry rushed for 197 yards and a score.

Seniors Chris Lopez (16 carries, 180 yards) and Phil Boyar (20 carries, 150 yards) combined for 330 yards rushing and five trips to the end zone as Pittsford rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat Penfield, 46-21. Penfield's Gary Schreib hit Anthony Lockett for TD passes of 60 and 35 yards in the first quarter.

A gift for dad: Rick Carpiniello of The Journal News did a nice job of telling Kelly Jarer's inspirational story this morning.

Jarer, the field hockey and girls lacrosse coach at Sleepy Hollow, donated a kidney to her father, Dennie Cronin, last February. She was back on her feet for a fundraiser less than a week later and back to coaching, working from a chair, shortly after that.

"When she showed her face (at the fundraiser) even though she was recovering, that was really big for us," said senior field hockey captain and two-sporter Alee Praino. "It was tough, but it was good to have her back. She was coaching from a chair for a while, and she popped a couple of stitches yelling at us. She did. But it was good to have her back."

The story, though, goes beyond that as Carpiniello explains how Jarer built the field hockey program almost from scratch and then started the lacrosse team. Check it out with your Sunday coffee.

Cross country: Fayetteville-Manlius rested at least five of its first seven runners but still won the Girls Varsity 2 race at the Chittenango Invitational with 31 points to 68 for Baldwinsville and 77 for Tully. F-M's Katie Sischo won in 19:10.9, followed by teammates Kristen Buchan and Alexandra Chapman.

At the Elmira Invitational, Johnson City freshman Lauren Mullins posted a course record of 19:35.9 to triumph by more than 42 seconds over Kate Rosette of team champion Corning. Mullins with ninth in the state in Class B as an eighth-grader.

Wilson update: The Buffalo News reported today that conflicting statements from eyewitnesses contributed to the decision to drop felony sex charges against three former Wilson High baseball players.

The three defendants — an 18-year-old and two 16-year-olds — originally were charged with third-degree aggravated sexual abuse, a felony that could have brought them seven-year prison terms. The Niagara County DA dropped those charges last week and lodged new charges of forcible touching and first- and second-degree hazing; none of the charges is higher than a misdemeanor, which means state law guarantees them youthful offender status and no criminal record if they are convicted. The maximum penalty is a year in jail.
