Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008: Maryvale's Estarfaa rushes for 463 yards, seven TDs
Leading off today: Maryvale senior Brooks Estarfaa ran for a Section 6-record 463 yards on 20 carries and scored seven touchdowns to lead Maryvale to a 63-31 football rout of Medina last night.

The 5-foot-10 Estarfaa ran for touchdowns covering 50, 5, 54, 3, 60, 96 and 3 yards. He ran for 312 yards on 14 carries in the first half as Maryvale took a 44-18 lead.    The previous Western New York record was 458 yards by Larry Croft of Forestville on 24 carries in 1997. The state record of 569 yards was set last season by Westhill’s Dale Ross, and Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon had a 467-yard game in 2003 to rank above Estarfaa.

Maryvale piled up 567 rushing yards on 40 carries.

Medina took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but Estarfaa ran for four straight scores as the Flyers took a 36-12 lead. He made an interception that set up his 54-yard scoring run.

Wounded Somers triumphs: Running back Rob Lombardo (broken finger) was a scratch and Matt Deiana (neck injury) was limited, but Somers, ranked fifth in Class A, still pounced on No. 9 Eastchester, 28-6.

Junior fullback Erik Pfiffner rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and senior Erik Zmuidins (7-for-12) threw for two TDs for Somers.

With Eastchester QB Joe LaRocca out with a sprained ankle, the Tuskers' defense forced three turnovers and held the Eagles to no offensive TDs and just three first downs after the first quarter.

Binghamton grinds out a win: Jamar Smith rolled up 346 of Binghamton's 483 rushing yards en route to 54-25 win over Whitesboro.

Smith carried 20 times and scored on runs of 1, 20, 72, 46 and 68 yards for Binghamton, which had to overcome an 18-13 halftime deficit. The Patriots opened the second half by calling on Smith every snap of an eight-play drive that ended with his 20-yard run. His next 186 yards worth of scores turned it into a 40-25 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Schenectady survives: Marcus Brandon caught three first-half TDs from Nick Ottati (12-for-24, 162 yards) to give Schenectady, ranked 15th in Class AA, a 21-point lead and the Patriots held on to edge host Newburgh Free Academy, 21-19.

Linebacker Dan Desbiens and tackle Billy Rios stopped Newburgh QB John Pilego on a sneak on fourth-and-one from the Patriots’ 13 with :52 left to preserve the victory.

Marc Thompson ran 26 times for 108 yards in the victory.

Six TD passes for Kacz: Casey Kacz threw six touchdown passes -- five in the first half -- as Sweet Home fought off Williamsville South, 43-35.

The Panthers, ranked sixth in Class A, stormed to a 43-7 lead as Kacz connected with Will Reese for three TDs.

Williamsville South sophomore Joe Licata set a school record with 322 passing yards and threw four TD passes. Daeshaune Clark caught three of the TD passes and finished with 14 catches for 123 yards.

Friday's rapid recap: Lockport junior David Fluellen sat out the first quarter because of a missed practice during the week and then ran 17 times for five TDs and a school-record 382 yards to highlight a 43-31 win over Niagara Falls. His scoring runs covered 77, 80, 47, 73 and 76 yards.

Brandon Murie carried 19 times for 221 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half, as Class A No. 13 Iroquois routed Hamburg, 42-6.

Capone Smith ran for two TDs and returned interceptions for two more as No. 5 Lackawanna blanked Olean, 38-0, in its final tune-up for next weekend's Class B showdown with No. 6 Fredonia.

Hilton scored the final 23 points and dominated Class AA No. 15 Pittsford, 37-14, as senior Justin Knorr set a school record with 311 yards on 39 carries and junior QB Duell Smith threw for two scores on a night in which the Cadets piled up 529 yards.

John Jay-East Fishkill upset Class AA No. 10 Carmel, 12-7, chewing up more than 12 minutes late in the game by driving 89 yards in 21 plays to the Rams' 10 on the strength of senior Mike Bulluzzi (114 yards) and the ground game.

Sidney sophomore QB Dylan Umbra ran for 118 yards and two TDs in a 32-26 upset of Class D No. 14 Bainbridge-Guilford. Umbra's 14-yard draw with :15 remaining and subsequent two-point conversion capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive for the victory.

Leejay Pollacchi rushed for three TDs and made an interception as Class AA No. 20 Saratoga turned back Shenendehowa, 30-21. At 4-0, Saratoga has already matched its win total from a year ago.

In a Class A confrontation, No. 14 East Syracuse-Minoa drove 15 plays and 87 yards to a Vince Caraballo scoring reception late in the third quarter and a 14-7 win against No. 25 Cortland.

Weather is the story on Long Island: Stormy weather trashed much of the sports schedule in Sections 8 and 11 on Friday, forcing numerous postponements.

According to Newsday's count, only three of 23 soccer games in Suffolk County were played as scheduled, with next week's observence of Rosh Hashanah complicating rescheduling the contests.

400-game winner dies: John Traver, who won more than 400 boys basketball games at Greenwich and Granville from 1964 to 1994, died yesterday at the age of 69. The cause of death had not been determined, but Tony Traver said his father had a bout with colon cancer in recent years.

Traver, who embraced a run-and-press style, went 419-235 with five Section 2 championships at Greenwich between 1969 and 1994.

"His goal was always to shoot 100 times a game," Tony Traver told The Post-Star. "He never reached it, but he figured if we shot 100 times and shot 33 percent, we'd win the game."
