Leading off today: Maryvale senior Brooks Estarfaa ran for a Section 6-record 463 yards on 20 carries and scored seven touchdowns to lead
Maryvale to a 63-31 football rout of Medina last night.
The 5-foot-10 Estarfaa ran for touchdowns covering 50, 5, 54, 3, 60, 96 and 3 yards. He ran for 312 yards on 14 carries in the first half as Maryvale took a 44-18 lead.
The previous Western New York record was 458 yards by Larry Croft of Forestville on 24 carries in 1997. The state record of 569 yards was set last season by Westhill’s Dale Ross, and Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon had a 467-yard game in 2003 to rank above Estarfaa.
Maryvale piled up 567 rushing yards on 40 carries.
Medina took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter, but Estarfaa ran for four straight scores as the Flyers took a 36-12 lead. He made an interception that set up his 54-yard scoring run.
Wounded Somers triumphs: Running back Rob Lombardo (broken finger) was a scratch and Matt Deiana (neck injury) was limited, but Somers, ranked fifth in Class A, still pounced on No. 9 Eastchester, 28-6.
Junior fullback Erik Pfiffner rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and senior Erik Zmuidins (7-for-12) threw for two TDs for Somers.
With Eastchester QB Joe LaRocca out with a sprained ankle, the Tuskers' defense forced three turnovers and held the Eagles to no offensive TDs and just three first downs after the first quarter.
Binghamton grinds out a win: Jamar Smith rolled up 346 of Binghamton's 483 rushing yards en route to 54-25 win over Whitesboro.
Smith carried 20 times and scored on runs of 1, 20, 72, 46 and 68 yards for Binghamton, which had to overcome an 18-13 halftime deficit. The Patriots opened the second half by calling on Smith every snap of an eight-play drive that ended with his 20-yard run. His next 186 yards worth of scores turned it into a 40-25 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Schenectady survives: Marcus Brandon caught three first-half TDs from Nick Ottati (12-for-24, 162 yards) to give Schenectady, ranked 15th in Class AA, a 21-point lead and the Patriots held on to edge host Newburgh Free Academy, 21-19.
Linebacker Dan Desbiens and tackle Billy Rios stopped Newburgh QB John Pilego on a sneak on fourth-and-one from the Patriots’ 13 with :52 left to preserve the victory.
Marc Thompson ran 26 times for 108 yards in the victory.
Six TD passes for Kacz: Casey Kacz threw six touchdown passes -- five in the first half -- as Sweet Home fought off Williamsville South, 43-35.
The Panthers, ranked sixth in Class A, stormed to a 43-7 lead as Kacz connected with Will Reese for three TDs.
Williamsville South sophomore Joe Licata set a school record with 322 passing yards and threw four TD passes. Daeshaune Clark caught three of the TD passes and finished with 14 catches for 123 yards.
