Lyons (1-5) also forfeited its regular-seaon finale after injuries and suspensions left the varsity short on players.
N.J. gridder dies: Ryne Dougherty, a 16-year-old JV linebacker for Montclair (N.J.) High, died last night after suffering a brain hemorrhage at a football game against Don Bosco Prep on Monday.
Dougherty is the third teen player to die in northern New Jersey this season. In August, 17-year-old Cliffside Park player Douglas Morales died from a head injury, and Sean Fisher, 13, of Waldwick died after collapsing during a rec-league football practice.
Canandaigua looks to future: A school district task force presented findings Wednesday from its study of whether Canandaigua should consider joining the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference.
"I think it’s hard to estimate how important it is to have the right information to base such an important decision," said Superintendent Donald Raw. "This clearly was good work that folks took the time collecting. It wasn’t hurried and they also went to the right sources. So when you have that kind of data, it makes a huge difference for making this important decision."
Among the issues in a possible decision to leave the Finger Lakes Athletic Association: finances, scheduling, divisional alignments, facilities, and the effect on modified sports and travel.
With Victor having made the jump this fall, Canandaigua is about 50 percent larger than Wayne, the next-biggest Finger Lakes football school. A move to Monroe County would pit Canandaigua against schools of similar size such as Webster Thomas, Irondequoit and Greece Athena.
The committee will make a recommendation to Raw, who will then present it to the school board. The district has until Dec. 1 to apply to the Monroe County league in time to be accepted for the 2009-10 school year.
