Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008: Adams returning as girls basketball coach at White Plains
Leading off today: Sue Adams' retirement lasted only slightly longer than Brett Favre's, but at least she didn't turn it into an ongoing saga.

With a search committee at White Plains unable to identify a satisfactory replacement after Adams resigned in the spring, she's agreed to resume coaching the girls basketball team, which has won four straight sectional championships, The Journal News reported.

Adams said at the time she hoped to spend more time with her family. Adams discussed the decision with her family before agreeing to return.

The search committee was led by boys coach Spencer Mayfield and did not include Adams. Terming it a shot in the dark, Mayfield asked Adams if she would consider returning.

"I don’t think anybody ever wanted her to leave," Mayfield said. "She did such a good job with the girls. She’s such a good role model."

A few results of note: Katrina McQuiggan scored midway through the first half for Amherst (6-7-1) in a 1-0 victory that marked Williamsville North first field hockey loss since 2006. The Spartans went 23-0 last year and were 12-0-1 entering yesterday's game. Williamsville North’s last loss came in the 2006 Section 6 final.

Red Hook (12-1), which looks like a serious contender on the girls' state volleyball scene this fall, presented coach Carrie Spiegel with her 200th win Tuesday in straight sets over New Paltz.

St. Francis Prep blanked St. John the Baptist, 7-0, yesterday for its 157th straight girls tennis victory. St. Francis will seek its 11th straight state CHSAA state crown next week.

Lyons forfeits: Lyons, eighth-seeded in the Section 5 Class DD football tournament, has forfeited its quarterfinal game to Caledonia-Mumford, TheBatavian.com reported.

Lyons (1-5) also forfeited its regular-seaon finale after injuries and suspensions left the varsity short on players.

N.J. gridder dies: Ryne Dougherty, a 16-year-old JV linebacker for Montclair (N.J.) High, died last night after suffering a brain hemorrhage at a football game against Don Bosco Prep on Monday.

Dougherty is the third teen player to die in northern New Jersey this season. In August, 17-year-old Cliffside Park player Douglas Morales died from a head injury, and Sean Fisher, 13, of Waldwick died after collapsing during a rec-league football practice.

Canandaigua looks to future: A school district task force presented findings Wednesday from its study of whether Canandaigua should consider joining the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference.

"I think it’s hard to estimate how important it is to have the right information to base such an important decision," said Superintendent Donald Raw. "This clearly was good work that folks took the time collecting. It wasn’t hurried and they also went to the right sources. So when you have that kind of data, it makes a huge difference for making this important decision."

Among the issues in a possible decision to leave the Finger Lakes Athletic Association: finances, scheduling, divisional alignments, facilities, and the effect on modified sports and travel.

With Victor having made the jump this fall, Canandaigua is about 50 percent larger than Wayne, the next-biggest Finger Lakes football school. A move to Monroe County would pit Canandaigua against schools of similar size such as Webster Thomas, Irondequoit and Greece Athena.

The committee will make a recommendation to Raw, who will then present it to the school board. The district has until Dec. 1 to apply to the Monroe County league in time to be accepted for the 2009-10 school year.
