Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008: Shaker, Marshall pull off Class AA upsets
Leading off today: Quarterback Mark Ambrosio threw for 139 yards and rushed for 58 last night as visiting Shaker pulled off a 17-7 upset of previously unbeaten Schenectady, the No. 11 football team in Class AA according to the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Ambrosio, who was 7-of-11 on passes, ran 39 yards to the end zone in the fourth quarter for the game-clinching score. Jeremy Pryor (21 carries, 76 yards) scored on an 11-yard run to put Shaker ahead by 10-0 in the third quarter.

Marshall thrashes Gates Chili: Sophomore Ashton Broyld threw three TD passes and scored twice on long runs as Marshall beat No. 13 Gates Chili, 44-21.

There were four TDs -- including a 51-yard Broyld run -- in the first four minutes. His seven-yard throw to Eddie Jackson gave the Jurists the lead for good at 22-14. Broyld completed 19 of 28 passes for 216 yards and ran for another 158.

Wild win for Hilton: Senior Jeff Stanton caught a 20-yard TD pass from junior Duell Smith to lift Class AA No. 10 Hilton to a 54-48 overtime win over Edison.

Edison fumbled on the 3-yard line on its OT possession to seal the win for Hilton.

Stanton finished with eight catches for 117 yards and three TDs; Smith completed 13 of 22 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns.

Senior Joe Hlywa completed 22 of 34 passes for 429 yards -- No. 2 all-time in Section 5 -- and three TDs and also ran for two TDs for Edison.

Friday's rapid recap: Fox Lane, coming off a bye week, picked off No. 18 Eastchester in Class A, 34-26, to clinch a postseason spot and knock the Eagles out. Jesse Hunt completed 16 of 25 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns for the Foxes as they recovered from deficits of 12-0 and 20-6.

Syracuse Henninger won at Rome Free Academy for the first time since 1979, securing a 30-28 victory sealed by Kihary Blue's 65-yard scoring strike to Donte Gage late in the fourth quarter. Blue finished 12-for-14 for 196 yards and three TDs.

Defending state Class C champion Bishop Ludden pushed its winning streak to 19 with a 54-37 win against Hannibal. Rick Montgomery blocked a punt and returned it 33 yards to start a 28-point second quarter that included two TD passes from John Rooney (4-for-7, 99 yards and three TDs).

Senior Travis Fenstermaker went 11-for-15 for 223 yards and four TDs for LeRoy in a 41-19 win over Hornell. LeRoy is ranked fourth in Class C; Hornell is No. 8 in Class B. Andrew Alexander ran 12 times for 64 yards with one TD and added two catches for 61 yards.

Freshman Chris Nevinger ran 26 times for for 226 yards and four touchdowns as Letchworth overwhelmed Class C No. 18 Marcus Whitman, 50-18. Bucky Hendrickson added 16 carries for 95 yards and a TD.

Greece Athena senior Dwayne Cunningham ran for 172 yards and a TD on 20 carries in a 45-0 blitzing of Irondequoit. Joe Trimboli completed 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards and two TDs for the Trojans, No. 24 in Class A.

Schuylerville, No. 8 in Class C, fell behind by 10-0 before roaring back for a 49-23 victory against Cambridge. Brad Lyon rushed 12 times for 188 yards and QB Austin Batemen scored twice over the final 30 minutes. Claeton Corsetti's 91-yard kickoff return wrapped up the win.

In Class B, No. 13 Edgemont got past Briarcliff, 15-6. Joseph Hoffman rushed for 121 yards and a score on 18 carries.

Brentwood junior QB Alex Corporan ran for two TDs and threw for three, including an 18-yard pass to Gabriel Manzuota in overtime, to down previously unbeaten Northport, 34-27. After Brentwood scored in OT, Dan Russo (34 carries, 277 yards) was stopped by Kevin Kuhlmeier a yard short of the end zone to end the game.

William Floyd, No. 2 in Class AA, ran its winning streak to 39 by cruising past Sachem North, 30-6. With Floyd clinging to a 14-6 lead, junior Jarel Johnson intercepted a pass midway through the fourth quarter to stop a drive and set up Steve Murphy's 30-yard TD pass to Jesse Kelly. Kevin Hauter and Wayne Magee followed up a minute later for a sack in the end zone to stretch the William Floyd lead to 23-6.

Multiple girls soccer forfeits: Frontier forfeited eight games and Springville seven on the eve of the Section 6 girls soccer seeding meeting because each had a player who participated in a practice at Daemen College as part of an official college visit on Sept. 19 -- a violation of NYSPHSAA rules. Springville self-reported the incident.

Daemen, coached by Hector Vasquez, is a member of the NAIA’s American Mideast Conference.

"College coaches get paid to know the rules. They should know the high school and the college rules," Section 6 girls soccer chairman Chris Durr told The Buffalo News. "It’s disappointing when kids have to pay for the mistakes of adults."

St. Anthony's wins key CHSAA clash: Playing without star forward Rachel Nuzzolese (hamstring injury), St. Anthony's earned a 4-0 girls soccer victory over Sacred Heart to earn the CHSAA regular-season title and leave both squads 12-1-2. Jennifer Meier posted her first career hat trick.

No investigation: Section 4 Executive Director Ben Nelseon said the organization will not get involved in the controversy surrounding a recent girls JV soccer game between Horseheads and Vestal. The game ended in a forfeit after Horseheads players and coaches sad they heard Vestal fans direct racial slurs at the team and left the field.

Horseheads Superintendent Ralph Marino Jr. had asked the section to intervene after the Southern Tier Athletic Conference announced Tuesday that it had declined to get involved.

Nelson said he believed the matter should be settled by the league or the respective school districts.

"We have five leagues," Nelson said. "We try not to get involved unless the league asks us to do that."

Both districts conducted investigations and reached conflicting conclusions. Horseheads' report cited witnesses who claimed racial slurs were yelled at Horseheads players from the stands. Vestal officials denied that.
