Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008: Rome Free Academy ends Syracuse CBA's season, 27-26
Leading off today: Rome Free Academy never led until the extra-point kick in overtime before beating 14th-ranked Syracuse CBA, 27-26, in a Section 3 Class AA football quarterfinal last night.

CBA opened the overtime period with a 14-yard TD run by Fajri Jackson, but the extra-point attempt was tipped at the line of scrimmage. RFA running back Kyle Kimball then scored on a nine-yard run, and Andy D'Amore kicked the point for the victory.

RFA trailed, 20-13, with 4:46 remaining but drove 72 yards to tie the game. Mark Capponi hit Marco Dominic on a nine-yard slant route with 1:14 left for the TD.

Attica pulls an upset: Attica won a Section 5 playoff game for only the second time in 30 years, scoring an 18-0 upset of No. 4 East Rochester/Gananda in Class B action.

Junior QB Brandon Rolling and senior receiver Shawn Dupuis connected on touchdowns of nine and 19 yards. Andy Ruddock rushed 37 times for 162 yards.

ER/Gananda quarterback Neal Dotterer went 11-for-25 for 106 yards to finish his career with 5,401 yards, a Section 5 record.

Smith sparks O-A: Senior Tim Smith piled up 333 all-purpose yards and scored six touchdowns as No. 8 Oakfield-Alabama advanced in Class C action with a 63-34 victory against Dansville.

Smith rushed for 196 of yards and scored four times on the ground, caught a 46-yard TD and had a 91-yard kickoff return for a score. Senior tailback Brad Riner added 178 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

Ramapo loses: Justin Autera rushed 40 times for 240 yards and three TDs for Mahopac in a 28-27 victory over No. 24 Ramapo in Class AA action. Autera scored on a five-yard score with 1:09 left to secure the victory.

Ramapo had taken the lead on a three-yard run by Nick Padilla with 5:39 left, but the extra-point kick failed. On the ensuing Mahopac drive, Taps hit Tyler Perrelle on a 19-yard swing pass on a fourth-and-9 throw, and Autera gained 38 yards on six consecutive runs to the 5. On second down, Autera fumbled near the goal line but the referees ruled it a TD.

Thinning the soccer herd: One of the absolute certainties of the soccer postseason is that numerous ranked teams will fall out of their respective sectional tournaments early. Yesterday was a big day for just that sort of development.

In Class C boys action, Faith Heritage knocked out No. 2 Mohawk in overtime, 2-1, as Jeff O'Brien cashed on a Mike Last direct kick that had hit a post. Mohawk had been 18-0 entering the game; Faith heritage (9-8-1) moves into the sectional semifinals.

In Class B, Skaneateles bounced No. 8 Mount Markham, 1-0. Spencer Parker scored off an A.J. Richichi corner kick

midway through the first half and goalkeeper Jacob Bird made five saves for the Lakers (12-5-3). Mount Markham finished 15-4.

A pair of ranked Section 5 Class A teams also bit the dust. Sophomore Andrew Smith and junior Rory Foster each scored two goals apiece as Pittsford Mendon crushed No. 6 Freddie Thomas, 8-3. Junior Luke Tylutki assisted on three goals for the Vikings.

Mendon's crosstown rival wasn't as fortunate as Victor scored a 4-1 triumph against No. 19 Pittsford Sutherland. Senior Max Richardson posted two goals -- including one just 25 seconds into the game -- and an assist to avenge a 2007 overtime loss to the Knights.

Record-setting shutout: Lansing goalkeeper M.C. Barrett posted her school-record 42nd career shutout as Lansing, top-ranked in Class B, defeated Newark Valley, 5-0. Ellyn Grant-Keane scored her 33rd and 34th goals of the season for the Bobcats (19-0).

Oliva must decide: Christ the King coach Bob Oliva, tied for 13th in state scholastic history with 549 boys basketball victories, is considering resigning or taking a leave of absence for medical reasons, The Daily News reported.

Oliva, who was hospitalized for three days last week after complaining of chest pains, said a heart ailment was diagnosed this month and stress may be contributing to his condition. Last spring, Oliva, 63, told officials at the Queens school that he received a letter from a Florida law firm that accused him of sexually abusing a family friend more than 30 years ago.

The alleged victim is seeking $750,000 and Oliva's resignation from Christ the King. Oliva has strongly denied the allegations, has received a vote of confidence from school administrators and has not been hit with criminal charges.

Oliva said doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat and a blockage. He has a follow-up appointment next week.

If Oliva steps aside, assistant coaches Artie Cox, Derrick Phelps and Greg Lemko are expected to run the team. Christ the King is 96-20 in the past four seasons, finishing in the top 10 of the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings each time.

Tough break for St. A's: No. 3 St. Anthony’s will be without Atiq Lucas when the Friars travel to No. 6 Iona Prep today in a Class AA football game. The senior running back suffered a broken leg Saturday early in a 24-6 victory against Chaminade in Uniondale.

Lucas underwent surgery after an examination showed a broken right tibia and fibula. A rod was inserted into the leg, putting Lucas out of action through the end of the year. he had piled up nine touchdowns in six games, including two on kickoff returns.
