Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008: Croton-Harmon upsets Dobbs Ferry, 22-21
Leading off today: Croton-Harmon went for two in order to become "the one" yesterday.

Croton-Harmon coach John Catano elected to go for two points and the win after Joe Tralli wrestled senior Nick Mainiero's pass from the hands of Rob Alexander to bring Tigers to within a point with 90 seconds left in their Section 1 Class C football semifinal with Dobbs Ferry.

Mainiero connected on a rollout pass to sophomore Matt Tralli for the conversion and the 22-21 victory, ending the Eagles' 69-game Section 1 winning streak that began in 2001.

Croton-Harmon, which fell behind by 14-0 in the first quarter, needed to stop Dobbs Ferry one last time after the Eagles, ranked second by the New York State Sportswriters Association, drove to the Croton-Harmon 20 with 46 seconds left, and Matt Tralli came through with the game-clinching interception.

"I give him credit at the end for going for two, not going for one and the tie and bringing it into overtime," said third-year Eagles coach Chris Wagner, who won a state title his first year and was the runner-up last year. "We had our chance here, we had our chance there, but we didn't make the best of it."

Mainiero threw for 82 yards and rushed for 101.

Chatham out, too: Twelfth-ranked Chatham also exited the Class C tournament at the hands of an unranked opponent. Chris Hughes threw to Josh Rice for TDs covering 44 yards in the second quarter and 30 in the third as Watervliet beat Chatham, 20-3. Hughes also ran seven yards for a second-quarter TD.

Webster Schroeder, Gates Chili advance: Junior Pete Noto ran 16 times for 109 yards, ran for two TDs and also scored on a 55-yard pass play as No. 16 Webster Schroeder defeated No. 20 Rochester Marshall, 35-30, in Class AA action.

His work offset 330 passing yards by Marshall sophomore Ashton Broyld, who was 23-of-43. The Jurists drove 99 yards to a 12-yard Eddie Jackson TD catch to cut Schroeder's lead to 28-24, but Noto scored on a 21-yard run the next time Schroeder had the ball.

In the earlier semi, Gates Chili ran over No. 9 Hilton, 41-21, as Rickey Stevens carried 28 times for 216 yards and his seventh 200-yard game of the season. The Spartans picked up 404 yards on the ground to avenge a 47-32 loss to the Cadets at Gates Chili during the regular season.

"We had the potential to do this the first time," Stevens said. "We didn't execute the way our coaches wanted us to. This time we did what our coaches told us and this is the result."

Nyack cashes in mistakes: No. 13 Nyack scored off four of six turnovers by No. 5 Somers and overpowered the host Tuskers, 30-7, in the Section 1 Class A semifinals.

  •    Raymond Nichols threw for a touchdown and ran for another for Nyack (8-1), which will next try to avenge a 20-7 loss to Ossining a month ago.

A fumbled opening kickoff set up a short field goal by Sanley Pierre Louis, and an interception by Antoine McLaughlin (eight tackles, two interceptions) gave Nyack the ball at the Somers 31. Six plays later, Brandon Johnson ran five yards to make it 10-0 early in the second quarter.

"I think everyone thought we were the stepchild of this tournament," Nyack coach John Castellano said. "Our kids just believed. They don't care who we played. They were the forgotten ballclub. They were motivated and they played hard."

West Genny advances: Trailing by seven and facing fourth-and-goal from the 8 in overtime, West Genesee senior QB Jim Marks connected with Jake Fietkewicz in the end zone to tie the score at 34, giving the Wildcats the life they needed to pull out a 41-34 victory over Liverpool in double overtime.

Marks threw a 20-yard TD pass to John Glesener to start the second OT in the Section 3 Class AA semifinals and finish the game with five passing strikes and a rushing TD.

No. 8 West Genesee rallied from a 20-0 first-half deficit.

"This is a testament to their character, getting the job done when you've got to get it done," West Genesee coach Joe Corley said. "I'm so proud of our guys."

Rye recovers: Class B No. 1 Rye recovered from Tom Hanney's 84-yard quarterback draw in the first quarter to storm past No. 13. Nanuet, 40-13, by scoring scoring three touchdowns in a six-minute span late in the second quarter.

Quarterback Connor Eck was 13-of-18 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, and T.J. Storino caught scoring strikes of 48 and 16 yards in the second quarter.

L.I. highlights: William Floyd capped its sixth straight unbeaten regular season with a 42-14 win over Ward Melville. Quarterback Steven Murphy (5-for-7, 71 yards) accounted for four touchdowns as the Colonials won their 41st straight game.

Connetquot downed Northport, 37-9, as senior Jon Sternbach -- who set a school record with a 99-yard TD reception last year -- added a 100-yard interception return for a TD to his resume. Sternbach also caught a 57-yard TD pass from qRyan Anderson (6-of-10, 155 yards, two touchdowns).

Junior JeVahn Cruz ran 16 times for 287 yards and six touchdowns to lift Half Hollow Hills West over East Hampton, 49-26.
