Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008: Bath vs. Oneida, NYSPHSAA Class B football semifinals
Pregame: Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Weather at PAETEC Park is mostly clear with some brief periods of snow.

The temperature as of 1 p.m. was 25 degrees, with an afternoon high of 30 expected and snow in the forecast.

The field is clear for the Class C game between Southwestern and Elmira Notre Dame, but the footing is not especially good.

First quarter: Oneida opens with a three-and-out possession from its 25. The punt rolls dead at the Bath 43.

(Apologies for the interruption in updates; I lost connectivity -- I think the laptop is actually freezing up.)

Second quarter:    We're a minute into the second quarter and still scoreless. Oneida is driving with a first-and-10 at the Bath 14. Bath's Sam Musso knocks down a Ryan Kramer third-down pass, and Joe McCormick's 25-yard field goal attempt goes wide to the right.

Oneida gets the ball right back on a first-down fumble, with Wade Kline recoveing. The result is a five-play, 29-yard drive capped by Kramer's 2-yard keeper with 6:01 left in the second quarter. Extra point by McCormick is good. Oneida 7, Bath 0 with 6:01 left

Bath averts disaster as the Rams hold following an Andre McCloud fumble on the fifth play of a drive near midfield. Oneida immediately goes three-and-out.

The Bath offense continues to struggle. Taking possession at their 15 following a punt, they pick up only two yards in three snaps. The Tyler Hutcheson punt attempt is blocked on a surhge up the middle by Brandon Miles, and Jesse Chrstian makes a short return.

That gives Oneida possession at the Bath 19 with 1:39 left, and the Indians drive five plays to a score. Kramer connects with Miles on a 5-yard throw to the left edge of the end zone. McCormick's conversion kick fails. Oneida 13, Bath 0 with 0:26 left

Bath runs on the clock on a very frustrating half of football for the Rams.

Some halftime stats: Ryan Kramer leads Oneida with nine carries for 55 yards. He's also 3-for-7 through the air for 24 yards. . . . Cody Hutcheston leads Bath with 34 yards on 13 carries, picking up the load for Andre McCloud (5 carries, 9 yards), who's been hobbled by what appears to be a lower leg injury). Bath QB Jake Kuver is 1-for-4 for 3 yards. He's was the victim of a couple of drops in the second quarter that stalled out Bath's possession following the first Oneida TD.

Oneida holds a 5-4 edge in first times and a 122-54 yardage margin even though Bath somehow leads in time of possession, 13:07 to 10:53. The teams have had 28 snaps apiece.

Third quarter: Andrew Nesbitt returns the kick 15 yards to set Bath up at its own 40. Bath QB Jake Kuver gets swarmed on a second-down pass attempt, losing 12 yards back to his 30. A fumbled exchange on third down costs the Rams two yards, then punter Tyler Hutcheson bobbles the snap and is buried by a sea of orange and white at his own 19.

  •    Scoring drive consists of four plays, the last of which is Kramer hitting an acrobatic Miles in the back right corner of the end zone for five yards. Oneida ses the swinging gate on the conversion, Kramer takes the snap in shotgun formation with the line still set up wide left and hits Wade Kline for the conversion. Oneida 21, Bath 0 with 8:10 left

It just keeps getting worse for Bath. Oneida's kickoff goes out of bounds, but the Rams opt for a re-kick. The Indians then successfully execute an onside kick and recover at their own 46. A failed run and two incompletions kill the threat, but the message is undeniable: Oneida is in control of this one.

Bath subsequently goes three and out. Oneida will start at the Bath 48 with 4:55 to play in the third.

Oneida's defense certainly has a lot to do with it, but Bath is showing me nothing today. It has to be a disappointing ending for the Rams. Losing McCloud early certainly didn't help. He's standing on the sideline with his left ankle heavily taped, which badly limits Bath's options.

Oneida turns it over on downs, so Bath will start at its 39 in the closing monets of the quarter.

Bath is forced to punt. Oneida will open the final quarter just beyond the 50.

Fourth quarter: Oneida is content to run a series of dives of keepers, which will keep the clock running and presumably keep everyone healthy with a trip to the Carrier Dome almost certanly ahead.

Kramer's keeper with 5:44 to play caps a 51-yard drive and extends the Oneida lead to 27-0 after the conversion pass fails. Oneida 27, Bath 0

We're into garbage time in the closing few minutes. Bath goes nowhere on its possession and Oneida starts at its 32, again pounding the ball into the line to run time off the clock.

Final score: Oneida 27, Bath 0.
