Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008: Fayetteville-Manlius girls win their third Nike Cross Nationals championship
Leading off today: The Fayetteville-Manlius girls cross country team won its third straight Nike Team Nationals championship today in Portland, Ore.

F-M scored 66 points and easily outdistanced Saugus, Calif., at 135. Saratoga (193), Queensbury (204) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (251) finished fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.

Queensbury's Danielle Winslow led all New Yorkers with a fourth-place finish on the five-kilometer course in 17:48.4, about 21.5 seconds behind winner Chelsey Sweinsson of Texas. Sophomore Courtney Chapman led F-M with a seventh-place showing in 17:53, and teammates Meaghan Anklin (19th), Hannah Luber (21st) and Mackenzie Carter (24th) all cracked the top 25.

In the boys race, North Central High from North Spokane, Wash., captured the championship with 134 points, ahead of York, Ill., Elmhurst at 151. Shenendehowa was seventh at 222 and Fayetteville-Manlius 16th at 314. Individually, Alex Hatz of F-M was sixth in 15:26.4.

Milestone for Curran: With his usual minimal fanfare, Archbishop Molloy boys basketball coach Jack Curran, 77, racked up career victory No. 900 in boys basketball last night with a 93-53 home triumph against Monsignor Scanlan.

The only acknowledegment of the milestone was a brief public-address announcement after the game.

"It makes the game bigger than it is, but maybe that was good because we had a decent crowd and people were into it," Curran told FiveBoroSports.com. "It’s good for the kids when they get a big crowd. I know they like that. Too much has been made of me over the last couple of years. I’m here so long. I’d like the kids to get the attention. I get enough attention.”

Curran, who's served at Molloy for more than 50 years, is the winningest coach in state history. (Related link: All-time list.)

Wrestling stays in Albany: The Times Union Center in Albany will serve as the venue for the NYSPHSAA wrestling tournament for the next four years, the organization announced yesterday.

The 2009 championships are scheduled for Feb. 27-28.

The event attracted 15,000 spectators over two days in Albany in 2007 and was held in Rochester last season.

NYSPHSAA wrestling committee officials said the vote was unanimous, citing the average travel distance of the respective sections.

Long streaks end: The nation's longest high school football win streak is over after South Panola lost to Meridian in overtime, 26-20, in the Mississippi Class 5A state championship game in Jackson last night.

The Tigers had won 89 straight games, the third-best run in U.S. history, en route to five straight state championships. Only Concord (Calif.) De La Salle (151) and Charlotte (N.C.) Independence (109) won more consecutive games than the Batesville school.

With South Panola's loss, Maryville, Tenn., inherited the longest active streak at 74 games, but Hillsboro snapped

Brentwood finishes at No. 1: The Brentwood boys soccer team has finished the season with No. 1 national rankings from a pair of organizations after posting a 24-0 record.

The Indians, the NYSPHSAA Class AA champions, finish the year at the top of the poll condicted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as well as in ranking compiled by ESPN RISE magazine.

The Indians were honored Monday at the school’s Sonderling Auditorium in a ceremony attended by several local dignitaries.

"This was a big night for the Brentwood Public School District,” said Superintendent Donna Jones. “It was our community forum and this undefeated, nationally acclaimed soccer team is a part of what we’re most proud of in this community: the hard work, dedication and caring shown by our residents, students, teachers, administrators and athletes."

Greenport record tumbles: Ryan Creighton of Greenport scored 14 points last night in a 61-52 loss to East Hampton, to give him the school's career scoring mark with 2,122 points.

The senior broke record held by Al Edwards, who now coaches Greenport. He has a shot at the NYSPHSAA career record of 2,613 set by Ken Wood in 1989, and could also challenge the overall mark of PSAL legend Sebastian Telfair for Abraham Lincoln in 2004. Former Archbishop Molloy great Kenny Anderson is No. 2 on the overall scoring list at 2,621.

Next step uncertain: While senior Lance Stevenson is expected to wrap up a stellar scholastic career at Abraham Lincoln this winter, it's any guess when or where the player some regard as New York City's next prodigy will get started.

Freshman sensation LeBrent Walker considered Lincoln, Wings Academy and Cardozo before winding up at Bayside last week and told The Daily News hw could make his debut Dec. 12 against Holy Cross. But PSAL eligibility rules prohibit a student who has been listed on an active roster in any other school from playing the same sport for a second school during the same season.

Walker, a 6-foot-1 guard, began the school year at Our Savior New American in Centereach and was still considered to be on the OSNA roster last week, assistant coach Eric Jaklitsch said. Walker participated in a preseason game against Bay Shore and a scrimmage against Lower Merion(Pa.) High.

"Since he didn't transfer from a school in New York City, he may not fall under that rule because he's a freshman," said Marge Feinberg, the Department of Education spokeswoman. "We're currently looking at his records to see if he's eligible."
