Leading off today: Honeoye Falls-Lima has been approved for membership in the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference beginning next fall, but Canandaigua will have to wait at least one more year for its turn, the
Democrat and Chronicle reported today.
Honeoye Falls-Lima will become the league's 22nd member one year after Victor joined and will probably compete in most sports in Monroe County Division III with other Class A schools.
HF-L currently competes primarily in the Livingston County Athletic Association, although the school's lacrosse, tennis, skiing and some modified-level teams already play Monroe County schools routinely as an associate member.
Canandaigua will remain the largest Finger Lakes Athletic Association school, a status made more obvious once No. 2 Victor left.
"It made sense for our kids," Canandaigua AD Jim Simmons said. "I'm surprised. I thought we had a lot to offer in terms of our program. We would be competitive."
Observers had said ahead of the vote that the fact that no part of the Canandaigua district is actually within Monroe County might be a problem, particularly if other schools or districts approached with requests for membership in the future.
Too good for their own good: Indian River has been voted out of the Section 10 football league after 11 seasons and will return to Section 3 next fall, the Watertown Daily Times reported.
Indian River AD Ralph "Sandy" Overton told the paper he understood the decision. Indian River joined the league at a time when its program was in disarray, but the Warriors have won their last 49 Northern Football Conference games.
