Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008: Honeoye Falls-Lima voted into Monroe County League
Leading off today: Honeoye Falls-Lima has been approved for membership in the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference beginning next fall, but Canandaigua will have to wait at least one more year for its turn, the Democrat and Chronicle reported today.

Honeoye Falls-Lima will become the league's 22nd member one year after Victor joined and will probably compete in most sports in Monroe County Division III with other Class A schools.

HF-L currently competes primarily in the Livingston County Athletic Association, although the school's lacrosse, tennis, skiing and some modified-level teams already play Monroe County schools routinely as an associate member.

Canandaigua will remain the largest Finger Lakes Athletic Association school, a status made more obvious once No. 2 Victor left.

"It made sense for our kids," Canandaigua AD Jim Simmons said. "I'm surprised. I thought we had a lot to offer in terms of our program. We would be competitive."

Observers had said ahead of the vote that the fact that no part of the Canandaigua district is actually within Monroe County might be a problem, particularly if other schools or districts approached with requests for membership in the future.

Too good for their own good: Indian River has been voted out of the Section 10 football league after 11 seasons and will return to Section 3 next fall, the Watertown Daily Times reported.

Indian River AD Ralph "Sandy" Overton told the paper he understood the decision. Indian River joined the league at a time when its program was in disarray, but the Warriors have won their last 49 Northern Football Conference games.

Fall tournament schedules
  • NYSPHSAA football
  • NYSPHSAA boys soccer brackets
  • NYSPHSAA girls soccer brackets
  • NYSPHSAA field hockey brackets
  •    There were only five Class A teams in the combined Section 7-10 last fall and 12 in Section 3. Indian River went 10-1, bowing out with a 35-12 loss to Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A quarterfinals.

Second call for nominations: Neil Kerr has started pulling together the pieces for the 2008 all-state football team. Reporters are encouraged to pass along nominations sooner rather than later even if you have not published your all-star section yet. Send a quick e-mail to Neil listing name/school/position on your candidates ranked in order in each class.

Coaches who wish to nominate their players may also do so. However, we ask one favor: Please also supply us with a quick mention of one or two other deserving players in your league (or 2-3 players locally in your class). It means something to us when a coach takes time to recognize deserving athletes from competing schools.

Extra points: Congratulations to The Daily News in Batavia for its rather belated entry into the online world this week. The paper has launched TheDailyNewsOnline.com and it looks good. The sports staff has some solid reporters whose work can now be seen beyond Genesee County. . . . NYSSWA member Steve Grandin has updated his very handy PDF document detailing the winners of all the NYPHSAA tournament team champions with results from the fall season.
