Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008: Nieman resigns as Canandaigua football coach
Leading off today: Canandaigua football coach Dave Nieman told team members yesterday he is resigning his position but will remain as a physical education teacher, the school district announced on its Web site.

Nieman was 29-8 in four seasons with the Braves. He won New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at Aquinas in 2001 and '02. Canandaigua was 2-6 in 2004 before Nieman's arrival.

Nieman said he intends to pursue a degree in educational administration.

"What I really have done with football is a smaller scale of what administrators do," Nieman said in a statement. "I believe I have a strong ability to lead, and have always worked well and collaborated with staff. Motivation is an area I feel very confident about. Having a good game plan and knowing how to implement it is something I think I have done well. I think in many ways what I have done as a coach translates to administration. The difference is, instead of only having a select few students I will be dealing with the entire school population. That excites me."

PSAL rejects request: The PSAL has denied Thomas Edison forward Josh Gray’s appeal for eligibility, FiveBoroSports.com reported.

Gray, who transferred to the school from Long Island City in March, was ruled ineligible for one year in September after the PSAL said his transfer was for athletic purposes.

Gray and his father, Herb, contend that the move was for academic reasons. He was granted a travel hardship transfer by the Department of Education since his daily commute took over two hours, which may have contributed to grades problems at LIC.

PSAL rules say a transferring student who was on

an active roster at a public high school during the year prior to a transfer is ineligible for one year unless there's a change of address.

Gray, a 6-foot-4 swingman, averaged nine points and eight rebounds as a sophomore.

Easrly-season surprise: Irondequoit (4-0) pulled off a December eye-opener last night with a 62-54 boys basketball victory over host Wilson, hanging on after building a 16-point lead in the third quarter.

The Wildcats (4-1), who came back to tie the score twice in the final three minutes, played without center Melquan Trotter, who suffered a broken leg last week.

Jordan Heath, a 6-foot-8 senior, scored a career-high 27 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked six shots in the win. Chris Culver added 16 points and eight assists. The two combined for 14 of Irondequoits 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Seeking nominations: Neil Kerr has started pulling together the pieces for the 2008 all-state football team. Reporters are encouraged to pass along nominations sooner rather than later even if you have not published your all-star section yet. Send a quick e-mail to Neil listing name/school/position on your candidates ranked in order in each class.

Coaches who wish to nominate their players may also do so. However, we ask one favor: Please also supply us with a quick mention of one or two other deserving players in your league (or 2-3 players locally in your class). It means something to us when a coach takes time to recognize deserving athletes from competing schools.
