Friday, Dec. 19, 2008: Deposit wrestlers suspended; police still investigating fracas
Leading off today: If you're looking for a little good news to shake off the early-winter blizzard blues, then just go away. There isn't any happy news to be found today. We haven't got a blog entry today as much as we have a police blotter.

   1. No Deposit, no return: Several Deposit varsity wrestlers have been suspended from school and the team following a fight Tuesday night during a meet at Marathon, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.

The Cortland County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fight reported Tuesday at Appleby Elementary School and arrests may be pending, a release from the department said. The melee involving adults and athletes broke out after an earlier fight between two wrestlers from Homer and Deposit during a match, the police report said.

Deposit Superintendent Bonnie Hauber would not say how many students have been suspended. The team is a combined Deposit-Hancock team, but no Hancock wrestlers were suspended, she said.

The suspended Deposit wrestlers violated the school district's code of conduct, Hauber said, adding that they will not compete in a tournament scheduled for this weekend at Onondaga.

Homer school officials are waiting for a final police report before deciding what action to take.

   2. Mamaroneck mis-steps: The hockey team's victory at an Albany-area tournament last weekend was tempered by two incidents involving Mamaroneck skaters, the Larchmont Gazette reported.

According to the paper, two team members were caught shoplifting on Dec. 12 and later that night team members’ smoking set off a fire alarm in their room at the Queensbury Red Roof Inn. A total of four students face the possibility of suspension from the team and from school.

There were no charges filed by the mall or the hotel.

"There were disciplinary matters that were addressed with appropriate consequences," said Debbie Manetta, spokesperson for the Mamaroneck School District. “To protect the privacy of the students and their families, I

       3. Pulaski resignations: Two veteran Pulaski teachers, one a coach, resigned this week following a district investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct, Time-Warner News reported.

Pulaski Superintendent Marshall Marshall said math teacher Chris Sligar and physical education teacher Chris Randall resigned. Randall was also the girls' basketball coach.

Marshall said the district can't comment on the nature of the investigation because personnel matters are confidential. State Police reportedly have been investigating but are not expected to bring charges.

"People have been concerned," Marshall said "There's been a fair amount of attention. People have certainly been seeking more information than we are allowed to share by law."

       4. State report completed: The New York State Division of Human Rights has finished its report on an Oct. 4 girls JV soccer game between Vestal and Horseheads at which racial slurs were allegedly directed at Horseheads players, a division official.

But the Press & Sun-Bulletin said the agency doesn’t plan to release the report until next month after officials in the two school districts have had the opportunity to comment according to Thomas D. Shanahan, deputy commissioner of external relations with the division.

Former Forks and Maine-Endwell coach dies: Richard "Dick" Russ, who coached football in Section 4 for more than 35 years, died today, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reported. He was 73.

Russ compiled a 167-86-3 record in 19 seasons at Chenango Forks and eight at Maine-Endwell. He coached five sectional champions and made it to the state semifinals with M-E in 1998. Russ retired after the 2003 season.
