1. No Deposit, no return: Several Deposit varsity wrestlers have been suspended from school and the team following a fight Tuesday night during a meet at Marathon, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.
The Cortland County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fight reported Tuesday at Appleby Elementary School and arrests may be pending, a release from the department said. The melee involving adults and athletes broke out after an earlier fight between two wrestlers from Homer and Deposit during a match, the police report said.
Deposit Superintendent Bonnie Hauber would not say how many students have been suspended. The team is a combined Deposit-Hancock team, but no Hancock wrestlers were suspended, she said.
The suspended Deposit wrestlers violated the school district's code of conduct, Hauber said, adding that they will not compete in a tournament scheduled for this weekend at Onondaga.
Homer school officials are waiting for a final police report before deciding what action to take.
2. Mamaroneck mis-steps: The hockey team's victory at an Albany-area tournament last weekend was tempered by two incidents involving Mamaroneck skaters, the Larchmont Gazette reported.
According to the paper, two team members were caught shoplifting on Dec. 12 and later that night team members’ smoking set off a fire alarm in their room at the Queensbury Red Roof Inn. A total of four students face the possibility of suspension from the team and from school.
There were no charges filed by the mall or the hotel.
