Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008: ESPN announces season-ending basketball tournament
Leading off today: It's a baby step toward something more ambitious, but it's nevertheless a step forward for ESPN in its bid to put together a season-ending high school basketball tournament.

ESPN RISE and Paragon Marketing Group announced this week that the National High School Invitational will debut April 3-5, 2009 with eight boys teams and four girls teams competing at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Md.

The event will fill its brackets with four-year high schools that have their respective governing body’s permission to participate. Teams with post-graduate students or re-classified fifth-year seniors will not be eligible.

The Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (boys teams), the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (girls teams) and the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (boys and girls teams) have given approval thus far for member schools to participate.

Among New York schools, Our Savior New American reportedly has said it will participate if selected for the event, which will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Soccer stars: A thank you goes out to Perry Novak for compiling the NYSSA boys soccer all-state team, which we announced this morning. We previously recognized the team selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, but that team is limited to players whose coaches are members of the NSCAA.

Recognized as players of the year are: Joseph Lopez (Brentwood, Class AA), Ngwese Ebangwese (Pittsford Sutherland, A), Brian Rogers (Bronxville, B), Eli Vitale (Red Creek, C) and Nathan Steward (Hamilton, D).

Recognized as coaches of the year are: Ron Eden (Brentwood, Class AA), Dan Costello (Comsewogue, A), Donald Lucas (Bronxville, B), Don Hartley (Red Creek, C), Mike Danaher (Fabius-Pompey, C) and Brian Latella (Hamilton, D).

The all-star list can be seen here.

  •    Former football star arrested: State police in Watertown arrested two suspects Wednesday in connection with an armed robbery at the Stewart's Shop in nearby Philadelphia. One of those arrested was Allen L. Ricks Jr., 20, who was a senior captain and running back for the 2006 Indian River football team, The Watertown Daily Times reported. He rushed for more than 800 yards and 10 TDs for an 11-1 team.

Both suspects are charged with first-degree robbery, were arraigned Wednesday at Brownville Town Court and then remanded to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building awaiting bail.

Early decisions: Ken Tysiac of The News & Observer in North Carolina did an interesting piece this month about young basketball players being offered college scholarships. The inspiration for the story was an area guard who was offered by Virginia Tech last summer before entering ninth grade.

The NCAA doesn't have a rule preventing coaches from offering non-binding oral agreements from players of any age, but scholarship papers can't be signed before November of the athlete's senior year. The National Association of Basketball Coaches' board of directors in June asked coaches not to offer scholarships or accept commitments before the end of a player's sophomore year of high school.

Extra points: Xaverian's Najee Tyler, a 6-foot-5 quarterback, gave an oral commitment to Purdue over the weekend. . . . Anali Okoloji has resurfaced on the Benjamin Banneker boys basketball team, having detoured through a New Jersey school and then Charis Prep in North Carolina after a strong junior year at Banneker. Okoloji, who left Charis after learning the school would probably not be certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse, posted 19 points Sunday in a 72-44 rout of Riverhead. . . . Croton-Harmon coach Bill Thom earned his 300th boys basketball victory Tuesday with a 58-49 win over Somers JFK. He is 300-187 in 23 seasons.
