Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008: Collegiate, Greece Athena humbled in Slam Dunk openers
Leading off today: The state's No. 1 boys basketball team in Class B took a step up in size and paid the price for it last night.

Manhattan's Collegiate School, which had been averaging 75 points a game in the early going, was limited to six second-half points and dropped a 46-30 decision to White Plains in the opening round of the Slam Dunk tournament at the Westchester County Center.

Collegiate (4-1), which returned four starters from the 2008 Federation Class B championship team, led by 24-19 at the half but shot just 2-for-18 over the final 16 minutes. Junior guard Bobby Jones (14 points) held Collegiate's Christian Fisch scoreless in the second half after he had scored 16 in the first two quarters.

Sophomore guard Lawrence Pope, who grew up in White Plains and transferred back from Oklahoma this year, made four three-pointers and scored 12 points in the win.

In other first-round action, Iona Prep, ranked fifth in Class A, routed Greece Athena, No. 20 in Class AA, by a 69-33 margin. Andre Pope scored the game's first eight points and four Gaels finished in double-figures led by Jordan Bronner (17).

Iona Prep, which forged a 35-6 halftime lead, and Peekskill (No. 7 in Class A) meet tonight at 7 o'clock in the semifinals.

Greece Athena got 13 points from 6-foot sophomore John Wallace Jr., son of the former Syracuse University star and NBA player.

Milestone for Adey: New York Mills' Mike Adey earned his 400th career victory in boys basketball with a 58-44 win against Poland. He has a mark of 176-53 with the Marauders and 400-150 overall in 28 seasons, having previously coached Rome Catholic. He has two Section 3 titles at each school.

Richmond Springs transfers Fred Russ and Brandon McNair (14 points) made their New York Mills debut.

  •    Red Jacket situation heats up: Tim Munn will go the arbitation route to settle his dispute with the Manchester-Shortsville school board after being denied reappointment as boys basketball coach over the summer, The Finger Lakes Times reported.

The board has disclosed its reasons for the decision in a six-page document that alleges Munn held practice during the offseason and on weekends; says he "exhibited a negative attitude" toward players; cites a strained relationship with former JV coach Larry Sutton; and claims he used "inappropriate" methods to handle a player’s off-the-court behavior.

The board also said Munn invited players to his home to use exercise equipment and watch game tapes, and did not furnish playbooks that players requested.

The paper said Munn and his attorney, Toby Reh, decided to request arbitration, which is the final step of the teachers union's grievance process.

"It impresses me that the board’s reasons are based on second-, third- and fourth-hand information,” Reh told the paper. "The board’s facts are, in many ways, mischaracterized and, in some cases, completely false."

Despite recommendations by Superintendent Bob Leiby and then-AD Jim Miller, Munn wasn’t reappointed for a 25th season on the bench.

The document says Munn told one player he wouldn’t make the starting lineup "rather than encouraging this student athlete to keep up the effort and keep working to be a better player. Mr. Munn seemed to have given up attempting to make the older players better and was concentrating his efforts on the younger players on the team ... we expect a coach to encourage all students," the board’s document stated.
