Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009: Boys & Girls knocks off Lincoln, 71-61; All-state football team announced
Leading off today: Boys & Girls put five scorers in double figures yesterday and defeated Abraham Lincoln, 71-61, in PSAL boys basketball action yesterday in Bed-Stuy.

Lincoln is No. 1 and Boys & Girls (9-4) No. 23 in the newest New York State Sportswriters Association rankings that will be released later today.

The Kangaroos got 19 points from sophomore sensation Mike Taylor, who made five three-pointers. Senior forward Tyler Young scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 rebounds. Anton Dickerson added 13 points and Lamount Samuell Jr. (10 points, 10 assists) and Leroy Isler (10 points, 10 rebounds) contributed double-doubles to help offset 37 points by Lance Stephenson.

"For me and my coaching staff and my kids, we knew we could win this game,” 'Roos coach Ruth Lovelace told FiveBoroSports.com. “My kids really feel like they belong. They don’t lay down for Lincoln. Other people might lay down for them.”

All-state football: The New York State Sportswriters Association has released its all-New York football teams for classes B, C and D, with star players from three state championship teams picking up player of the year honors as well.

The players of the year are Rye senior running back Kyle Ramalho in Class B, Jamestown Southwestern junior quarterback Zack Sopak in Class C and Maple Grove junior quarterback Chris Secky in Class D.

The complete all-state football team can be found here.

Coach Juan de la Rocha caught six players smoking marijuana at the team hotel and six more players were found to be involved at some level during a tournament at SUNY Morrisville late last month. Principal Donald Flynt and AD Chris Culnan completed meetings with the players and their parents yesterday. The other four players will each serve a five-game suspension. All 12 players also face school suspensions ranging from five days to seven weeks.

The school district did not identify the players, citing privacy rules.

Extra points: Joel Wright posted the moster game of the boys basketball season, accounting for 54 points and 27 rebounds in Thomas Jefferson’s 133-50 rout of Grady. The Orange Wave also got 26 points, 19 assists and 11 rebounds from Keith Spellman. . . . The Doug Marrone era at Syracuse has its first in-state football recruit. Port Richmond RB/DB Torian Phillips, who had been recruited by former coach Greg Robinson, committed to Syracuse on Monday. Phillips, a three-year varsity starter, ran for 1,486 yards and caught 20 passes for 410 yards as a senior, scoring 34 TDs.

Look for a change in the dynamics of Section 5 boys lacrosse this spring as Irondequoit drops down to Division 2 in its league and Class B for sectionals. With Monroe County League teams only playing 16 games this year instead of 18, it's not clear if Irondequoit will be maintaining its rivalries with the likes of Division 1 teams Fairport, Penfield, Pittsford or Rush-Henrietta.
