Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009: Mullins sets course mark at Elmira Invitational
Leading off today: Johnson City distance star Lauren Mullins broke the course record en route to a nominating victory this morning at the Elmira Invitational at Newtown Battlefield.

Mullins finished in 19:29.9, far ahead of Windsor's Maddy Seitz (20:51.7). Owego senior Jessica Scordino and Kristy Scordino were third and fourth, respectively, to lead the team to a victory with 65 points.

Corning's Jarred Cornfield paced the boys field in 17:30.2, but Windor's Mike Buchanon and David Bates were next across the line to help the Black Knights to first place with 29 points.

Streaking: What is probably the most amazing active streak in the state remains in tact as Buffalo City Honors began its 24th season of perfect league play in girls volleyball.

By beating Grover Cleveland 25-5, 25-16, 25-14 on Friday, the Centaurs extended their streak of sets won in the Buffalo City League to 778. They've never lost a set or match in league action.

"We certainly take pride in it,” coach Deborah Matos told The Buffalo News. “We go into every season respecting every team in our league."

On Monday, Pittsford Sutherland girls tennis will be at Fairport in pursuit of its 100th straight triumph. The Knights paired up top singles players Elena Vidrascu and Clare DuBrin for a doubles triumph Thursday during a 7-0 win over Victor.

Soccer notes: Bethlehem's 2-0 girls soccer win Thursday over Saratoga left the Eagles 5-0 with a 33-0 margin in goals for the season. Senior forward Kaitlyn Martin scored both goals.

Minerva-Newcomb win its first girls game in three years on Thursday with a 4-1 triumph against Keene. Charlotte Egli, an exchange student from Switzerland, picked up three goals and an assist.

The PSAL chaos got a little worse this week as the girls game between Susan Wagner and McKee/Staten Island Tech and Susan Wagner scheduled for Fr. Capodanno Field in Midland Beach had to be postponed. It seems a St. Peter's-Monsignor Farrell JV contest was already in progress, and the coaches for that game possessed a valid site permit, The Advance reported.

Forest Hills coach Bob Sprance estimates participation by girls is down from 1,800 to 1,100 and about 30 percent of the games have been forfeited in the first season of fall play after 28 years as a spring sport.

Too much? Zach Braziller of The New York Post wrote this week about Beach Channel beating Queens High School of Teaching 14-0 in a recent boys soccer game.

Braziller raises the question of whether Beach Channel belongs in a stronger division, which is always a tricky question. Read his blog here.

Well traveled: New Canaan (Conn.) got new quarterback this month as Turner Baty, a senior attracting some college interest, showed up to enroll.

   So what, right?

Here's the rest of the tale: Baty threw for 1,800 yards at Menlo-Atherton High in California as a junior and transferred to national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida over the summer. He wasn't good enough to win the starting job and di not play Aug. 29 in that school's nationally televised opener.

Ethics question: Does the New Canaan coach play the mid-level Division I recruit who suddenly shows up or go with the captain who's logged a full year of work with your kids to prep for the season.

   Stay tuned.
