Leading off today: Traditional Section 5 rivals Aquinas and McQuaid continued on their path to an early-season clash with intersectional
boys soccer victories yesterday.
Pat Conlon, Stephen Baker, Kevin Harrington and Chris Gutierrez each scored for McQuaid (5-0-1) in a 4-0 victory over John Jay East Fishkill, ranked No. 3 in Class AA, at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta.
It was Baker's 11th goal of the young season and Harrington's 10th. Eric Jackling earned the shutout for the Knights.
Aquinas, ranked sixth in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters Association, improved to 6-0 with 5-0 win over St. Francis of Athol Springs in Rochester. Regenail Thomas posted two goals and an assist.
Aquinas plays at McQuaid on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
More soccer: White Plains won a 4-3 decision over Class A No. 4 Keio Academy on a Guillermo DeMestral, second goal in six minutes, a penalty kick five minutes into sudden death.
Each team scored a penalty kick in the final 11 minutes of play.
"I've never seen a game end like that (on a PK in overtime) since I've been coaching," Tigers coach Marcel Galligani told The Journal News. "And I've been coaching 12 years."
With a minute to go in regulation, DeMestral tracked down a ball and fired low past Kojyun Masuko to bring on overtime.
Newark star to UB? The Buffalo News reported this morning that Newark senior Javon McCrea has committed to play basketball for the University of Buffalo next year.
The 6-foot-6 forward reportedly had scholarships offers from Georgetown and UMass, and there was a report over the summer that he had committed to the Hoyas.
McCrea averaged 20 points a game last season to earn a fifth-team position on the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A all-star team.
Cross country highlights: East Aurora senior Catherine Phillips broke the girls course record at Fireman's Park during the 15th West Seneca Invitational, clocking 18:16.47 in the small-school race. The old mark of 18:25.60 was set in 2007 by Amanda Solly of West Seneca East.
The boys course record also fell as Nate Kozyra, a Rush-Henrietta sophomore finished in 16:25.67 to top the 16:29.9 by Scott Longwell of Pittsford Sutherland two years ago.
