Kicking off: Call it a case of double trouble for Iona Prep. A week after opening with a 38-2 loss to New Jersey power Bergen Catholic, the Gaels surrendered 28 straight points en route to a 49-42 loss to Holy Cross in overtime Saturday.
Adding to their woes, the Gaels lost Tyrae Woodson-Samuels, a second-team all-state quarterback last season, to a shoulder injury and are now 0-2 after a perfect 2008 season.
Iona Prep, ranked eighth by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and expected to contend as one of the state's top Class AA teams, went up by three TDs on Jeff Mack's 40-yard run with 10 minutes to play but Woodson-Samuels (8-for-13, 236 yards) limped off the field afterward.
Holy Cross QB Dean Marlowe (274 passing yards, three TDs) scored on a short keeper and the Knights recovered an onside kick and scored again with 6:47 to play. After a punt, Marlowe, a James Madison recruit, drove Holy Cross to the tying TD with 2:25 remaining.
In overtime, Marlowe hit Devon Cajuste (12 receptions, 216 yards) from 3 yards for a score, and the defense registered two sacks to snuff out the last Iona Prep chance.
"Confused. Disappointed. I don't know what else to say," Iona Prep receiver Pete DeSalvo (189 yards, two TDs) told The Journal News. "We were all celebrating this win way too early. We just didn't come to play in the second half."
Second down: Jashem Hamilton brought back the second-half kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to spark No. 14 Rensselaer, the reigning Section 2 champion, to a 49-14 win over No, No. 9 Bishop Gibbons in Class D action. Hamilton's return and a Mico De Los Santos (278 all-purpose yards) conversion run built the lead to 22-7.
"It hurt. ... It killed us," Bishop Gibbons QB Derrick Pitts told The Times Union after running for 155 yards and throwing for 83. "The emotions went down the drain. We tried to stay fired up, but it just didn't work."
Following Hamilton's return, De Los Santos ripped off a 52-yard TD run and also scored on a 66-yard screen pass from quarterback Timmy Foust.
Third down: Senior Jake Meek went 16-for-23 for 287 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, three to senior Blair Roberts, as Class C No. 12 Bishop Kearney routed Eastridge 41-0.
The Kings scored on four of five first-half possessions, the last two on strikes from Meek to Jerome Lewis (seven catches, 83 yards) for 20 yards and Quinton Washington for 15 yards.
"That was awesome, we executed perfectly," Meek told the Democrat and Chronicle.
