Football two-minute read: Games of Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009
Kicking off: Call it a case of double trouble for Iona Prep. A week after opening with a 38-2 loss to New Jersey power Bergen Catholic, the Gaels surrendered 28 straight points en route to a 49-42 loss to Holy Cross in overtime Saturday.

Adding to their woes, the Gaels lost Tyrae Woodson-Samuels, a second-team all-state quarterback last season, to a shoulder injury and are now 0-2 after a perfect 2008 season.

Iona Prep, ranked eighth by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and expected to contend as one of the state's top Class AA teams, went up by three TDs on Jeff Mack's 40-yard run with 10 minutes to play but Woodson-Samuels (8-for-13, 236 yards) limped off the field afterward.

Holy Cross QB Dean Marlowe (274 passing yards, three TDs) scored on a short keeper and the Knights recovered an onside kick and scored again with 6:47 to play. After a punt, Marlowe, a James Madison recruit, drove Holy Cross to the tying TD with 2:25 remaining.

In overtime, Marlowe hit Devon Cajuste (12 receptions, 216 yards) from 3 yards for a score, and the defense registered two sacks to snuff out the last Iona Prep chance.

"Confused. Disappointed. I don't know what else to say," Iona Prep receiver Pete DeSalvo (189 yards, two TDs) told The Journal News. "We were all celebrating this win way too early. We just didn't come to play in the second half."

Second down: Jashem Hamilton brought back the second-half kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to spark No. 14 Rensselaer, the reigning Section 2 champion, to a 49-14 win over No, No. 9 Bishop Gibbons in Class D action. Hamilton's return and a Mico De Los Santos (278 all-purpose yards) conversion run built the lead to 22-7.

"It hurt. ... It killed us," Bishop Gibbons QB Derrick Pitts told The Times Union after running for 155 yards and throwing for 83. "The emotions went down the drain. We tried to stay fired up, but it just didn't work."

Following Hamilton's return, De Los Santos ripped off a 52-yard TD run and also scored on a 66-yard screen pass from quarterback Timmy Foust.

Third down: Senior Jake Meek went 16-for-23 for 287 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, three to senior Blair Roberts, as Class C No. 12 Bishop Kearney routed Eastridge 41-0.

The Kings scored on four of five first-half possessions, the last two on strikes from Meek to Jerome Lewis (seven catches, 83 yards) for 20 yards and Quinton Washington for 15 yards.

"That was awesome, we executed perfectly," Meek told the Democrat and Chronicle.

Fourth down: Wilson Central and Eden, a combined 4-13 a year ago, are both 3-0 heading into their Week 4 clash. Eden hosts the game Saturday afternoon.

Eden rallied past Class C No. 17 Cleveland Hill 10-6, and Wilson overcame a 12-0 deficit to top Gowanda 13-12.

Brian Bianchi (eight tackles, one sack) forced a fumble which Alex Shea (13 tackles) recovered and ran in 15 yards for the deciding score for Eden with 5:51 left to go. Eden QB Kyle Zittel was 6-for-7 for 117 yards.

Wilson's Ethan Baker caught a 26-yard pass from John Vincent in the third quarter and Nathan Meiers (19 carries, 122 yards) scored on a 7-yard carry in the fourth quarter of Wilson's win.

Pat Walch picked off two passes for Wilson.

Quick kicks: Zack Golden returned an interception 20 yards for one TD and a punt 74 yards for another as Class C No. 15 Cazenovia downed Sherburne-Earlville 48-0. Senior Chad Dorrance ran 12 times for 115 yards in the victory.

The stat sheet: Friday's game between Maine-Endwell and Dryden was stopped approximately 15 minutes after a fight broke out (video) just before halftime following a return of a missed field goal. Nate Reynolds ran 75 yards for a score on the first play after action resumed, and M-E, ranked No. 8 in Class B, went on to a 43-13 victory.

Reynolds rushed for 147 yards and Nate Duvall tacked on 107 as M-E picked up 317 on the ground.
