Monday, Nov. 23, 2009: Newburgh rallies past Brentwood in 'AA' soccer final
Leading off today: Newburgh Free Academy rallied for two goals in the final 16 minutes to beat defending state champion Brentwood 2-1 yesterday for the NYSPHSAA boys Class AA soccer crown in Oneonta.

Brentwood took a lead on Joseph Lopez's goal in the 36th minute and dominated much of the early action, but Newburgh tied with 16:16 to play as as Alex Bramall lofted a corner kick that Chris Catania headed in at the near post.

"It brought momentum back," Catania told The Times Herald-Record. "They got a little shook. The other team started to break down a bit and we started to build up."

With five minutes left, Wes Finch slid through a pass from the middle that left Bramall with an opening on the left wing. He fired hard and connected inside the far post.

"We weathered their storm and we did not panic,'' Newburgh coach Matt Iorlano said. “We just let things go as they were. I have all the confidence in the world. I have a lot of seasoned players, a lot of smart kids."

More soccer finals: New Hartford, which hadn't allowed a goal in seven games since Oct. 17, surrendered a pair in the second half and dropped a 2-0 decision to Comsewogue in the Class A game. Keith Vigorito connected 11 minutes after intermission and Mackie Magoulas sealed the Warriors second straight title with 3:05 left. Kyle Dougherty made five saves for the shutout.

"Their tactics were better,” New Hartford assistant coach David Wolfanger told The Observer-Dispatch. "They attacked our backs and our midfielders."

Junior midfielder T.J. Thompson scored midway through the second half to carry Centre Moriches past Marcellus 1-0 in Class B. Center Moriches finished the season 18-0 when scoring the game's first goal en route to its first title in the sport.

Colin Heffron's goal 29 seconds before halftime was the difference as Friends Academy edged Marathon 1-0 for the Class C trophy to cap a comeback from an 0-4 start to the season. Marathon was playing in its fifth Final Four since 2002.

Chazy notched its fourth state championship, all since 2004, as freshman Brandon Laurin scored on a penalty kick 2:21 after halftime for a 1-0 win over Class D Northville.

"It doesn't get old," Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe told The Press Republican. "People are always asking me that. There's always a new group of kids playing and winning a state championship is special for the community."

The Eagles rallied for a 2-1 win over defending champion Hamilton on Saturday.

PSAL football finals: Sophomore Joseph Garcia's 26-yard field goal with 8:36 to play -- the only points of the second half -- carried South Bronx to a 15-14 victory over Automotive for the PSAL Cup Division football championship.

Classmate Arbely Soto made an interception with under 30 seconds left to end the final threat by Automotive, which has rebuilt steadily from an 0-10 season in 2006 during which the team scored just one

Kadeem Bailey ran for 179 yards and scored two touchdowns, and Ricky Joseph threw two TD passes. Mark Thomas made two interceptions for the winners.

On Long Island, william Floyd downed Sachem North 26-7 in the Section 11 Division I title game to set up a bowl final against Freeport next weekend.

Volleyball titles decided: Canandaigua (Class AA) and Victor (A) gave Section 5 a sweep of the largest classes in the NYSPHSAA girls volleyball finals in Glens Falls.

Four years after surrendering a two-game lead in the final, Canandaigua polished off Baldwinsville 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23. Junior Kym Gordon put up 19 kills and seven blocks for Canandaigua, which barely advanced out of pool play Saturday with a 3-3 record and a playoff win over Ward Melville.

Victor swept past Cornwall 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 to defend its championship as senior Brigid Moore finished with 31 assists.

Class B Eden collected its seventh championship in the sport with a 25-15, 25-7, 25-22 victory to avenge a 2008 finals loss to Hendrick Hudson.

"It's so awesome to have this happy ending -- this is what we've been working for and I'm so glad the team finished like this," 6-foot-4 middle blocker Stacey Smith told The Buffalo News. "This is so much better, and especially as a senior, to be able to finish off like this is just awesome."

senior deominated Buffalo City Honors triumphed in Class C over Loudonville Christian 25-13, 25-20, 25-15.

"Those five seniors have been with me since they were little girls. I've watched them become young women," said coach Deborah Matos. "They're extraordinary, and they're hard-working, and they're dedicated."

It is the first title for City Honors since it won three straight from 1991 to 1993. The Centaurs came up empty in four state tournament trips from 1995 to '99/

In Class D, Elmira Heights Edison rallied back past Cattaraugus/Little Valley 21-25, 25-12, 20-25, 25-10, 25-20. The Spartans faced two elimination games on Saturday in pool play.

"The pressure was unbelievable," senior Courtney Rosing said. "We knew we had to work for it. We played our hearts out."
