Leading off today: I'm not saying it's fair. I'm just saying that's the way it's going to be.
When you're a member of a famous family and you do something wrong, then you've got a decent chance of getting away with it. But when your transgression is caught on video, well you're going to get clobbered.
Meet Nick O'Leary.
O'Leary is the grandson of golf legend Jack Nicklaus and one of the nation's top high school football recruits. The Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer tight end was suspended for two games this week by the Florida High School Athletic Association for making an obscene gesture toward the stands after a game in Ohio.
His gesture was a heat-of-the-moment reaction after a series of calls went against the Dwyer team in the closing moments of the game on ESPN, which was part of the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic.
He faced as much as a six-week ban for violating the FHSAA rule against unsportsmanlike acts during a 26-22 loss to Cleveland Glenville High on Monday. Dwyer coach Jack Daniels reacted by saying his team may forfeit the two games as a protest of the punishment, though he's since walked that back.
ESPN SportsCenter viewers were reminded more than once that O'Leary is ra top prospect as well as the grandson of you-know-who. Those factors contributed heavily to the scrutiny he received for his unfortunate gesture as part of the "perks and penalties" aspect of fame.
As a friend phrased it today, that lesson he learned didn't need to be played out in front of a national audience. He reaped the glory of being a top prospect; he paid the price for loses his temper.
It's a whole new atmosphere in which we raise our children.
Football notes: Garden City kicked off its season with a 28-0 victory Tuesday vs. Mepham. The Trojans, who may recall, turned in nine shutouts en route to a 12-0 record a year ago.
Jericho has folded its varsity program for the 2010 season due to a lack of players. With so little time to adjust, it looks as though scheduled opponents will end up with byes rather than pick up new opponents.
