Kicking off: Furious finishes were the house special last night to kick off Week 2 of the New York high school football season, with extra-point attempts near the end making the difference in a couple of instances.
At Ellenville, Jose Aldarondo scored on a 2-yard run and ran for the conversion with 30 seconds left to lift the Blue Devils past Liberty 28-27. At Ballston Spa, the Scotties fought off Saratoga Springs 21-20 as Jeremy Defibaugh batted down the potentially tying extra-point kick with 2:02 to go.
In the Ellenville game, Liberty took a 27-20 lead on Patrick Powell's 16-yard run with 5:00 to play but a two-point conversion pass failed. The Blue Devils then drove 54 yards to the win, with Robert Borriello hitting Aldarondo on a 31-yard third-down pass.
Coach Tony Borriello didn't hesitate to go for two after Aldarado's short scoring run. "I wanted to show I had faith in my kids and we went for the win," he told The Daily Freeman.
Ballston Spa rallied for 14 points in a two-minute span midway through the fourth quarter before Defibaugh's heroics. Saratoga's Luke Fauler's third touchdown pass of the night, a 23-yarder to Kyle Willmott, brought the Blue Streaks within 21-20.
On the extra point, Defibaugh broke through the line and got enough of the ball to keep it short of the crossbar. "We needed a stop and I got it," Defibaugh told The Times Union. "I saw a gap between the center and the guard and hurdled it."
First down: Staying with the close-call theme, Dillon Langtry fired a 33-yard TD pass -- his fourth of the night -- to Lee Wakefield on third-and-33 with 3:31 to go in Moravia's 24-20 victory over Elmira Notre Dame.
His third TD pass of the night was a 15-yarder to Dylan Powers with 7:57 left that brought Moravia within 20-18.
Langtry finished 12 of 17 for 236 yards to go with 16 carries for 98 yards. He ran for 120 yards in Moravia's 28-20 loss to Susquehanna Valley in the opener.
Second down: Junior Aaron Ertel hit senior Anthony Emmanuele (113 yards of total offense) for an 18-yard touchdown pass with :38.1 left to break a tie and lead Depew past Buffalo Burgard 12-6 in a clash of top-shelf small schools in Section 6.
"We knew it was going to be a 48-minute game -- we knew it was going to take the full game to beat this football team," Depew coach Dan McGrath told The Buffalo News.
Halftime: It was a great night to be a Watertown quarterback.
Watertown swatted down Mexico 50-26 as Tyler Augliano completed 10 of 13 throws for 325 yards and five scored in a road victory. Caleb Bettis made five catches for 254 yards and four scores.
Meanwhile, Immaculate Heart topped Thousand Islands 38-13 as Ryan Spicer went 17-for-26 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Kyle Hauk rushed for 114 yards and scored three TDs.
Third down: Lansingburgh senior Anthony Fogarty, a transfer from Cohoes, posted a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 2:03 remaining to wrap up a 35-28 victory against Gloversville.
Gloversville scored 22 straight points in a 12-minute span to pull with 28-22 before Fogarty's clutch play. Lansingburgh generated just 22 yards of second-half offense 20 on left QB Carlos Grillo's second TD pass of the evening to Fogarty.
Grillo went 9-for-12 passes for 197 yards.
