Leading off today: South Glens Falls star Hayden Knapp fired a third-round 71 on Tuesday to secure a one-stroke victory in the 95th New York State Women's Amateur Golf Championship.
Knapp, who recently capped her freshman high school season with a second-place showing in the NYSPHSAA Championships, fired 72-74-71--217 to finish at 4-over and edge Kennedy Swedick for the title at St. George's Golf and Country Club in East Setauket.
Knapp made three birdies on the back nine and forged her slim lead at No. 17 when Swedick, who just completed her freshman year at the University of Virginia after winning three straight NYSPHSAA championships at Albany Academy, had to settle for bogey after her tee shot rolled off the front of the green.
"That last stretch of holes, I did not look at the leaderboard," Knapp told the New York State Golf Association. "I just tried to hit the shot in front of me and not worry about it, just not change anything from the round and the nine holes before."
The victory earns the rising sophomore a spot in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in Brandon, Oregon, beginning Aug. 4.
Reigning NYSPHSAA champion Nina Choe, who just graduated from Ursuline Academy, tied for fifth after shooting 75-77-73--225. Rising Corning sophomore Delaney Abel, third at the NYSPHSAA tournament, finished 21st.
2025 Classification changes for football
