Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 (football edition): Aquinas cashes in McQuaid mistakes for 21-14 victory
Leading off today: Casey Vogl's second short touchdown run of the game, a three-yarder late in the fourth quarter set up by a fumble recovery, carried Aquinas to a 21-14 football victory yesterday over McQuaid.

The Little Irish, defending state champions and winners of 20 consecutive games, are ranked No. 1 in Class A; McQuaid is ranked 13th.

McQuaid had driven eight plays and 81 yards to tie the score on a five-yard run by Tomarris Bell with 6:42 remaining. McQuaid's defense forced a three-and-out, but the Irish got the ball back on McQuaid's fifth turnover of the day before an overflow crowd at Aquinas.

Vogl finished with 30 carries for 135 yards.

Riverhead impresses, Seaford stuns: There were several Long Island games of note on a crisp fall afternoon, but none more important or impressive than No. 19 Riverhead's 34-13 victory over No. 21 West Islip in Class AA action.

Ian Braddish's 85-yard kickoff return staked West Islip to a 7-0 lead, but Miguel Maysonet then took over with 30 carries for 316 yards, scoring all 34 Riverhead points with five TDs and a pair of two-point conversions.

Riverhead built a 28-13 halftime lead on Maysonet's four first-half scores, including a 51-yard pass play from Tim Velys.

Over in Section 8, Seaford, ranked 16th in Class A, got a strip-job takeaway and 30-yard TD return from sophomore linebacker Ryan Metas with 50 seconds to go to pull out a 7-6 win against Roosevelt, the No. 14 Class B team according to the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Roosevelt was on the brink of victory moments earlier as Mansur Wajid picked off a Chris Rigoli throw with just more than a minute remaining.

"I'm truly shocked," said Seaford running back Nick Barbuto, who carried 26 times for 98 yards. "I didn't even know what happened at first."

Westmoreland on a roll: In a game that will help shape the Class C picture in Section 3, No. 20 Westmoreland upset No. 3 Cazenovia, 23-20, as senior Nick Matwijec pulled down an interception in the end zone with :05 to go to foil a 93-yard Cazenovia drive.

Westmoreland rallied from a 13-0 deficit and took the lead for good as junior Justin Becker (24 carries, 122 yards) scored on runs of 29 and 6 yards. Senior T.J. Losowski kicked a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for what turned out to be the margin of victory.

Cazenovia closed to within 23-20 as Carter Franz (13-for-22, 172 yards) connected with Tom Colligan on a 30-yard scoring pass with 3:25 left, and Westmoreland was forced to punt on its subsequent possession to set up the climatic final drive.

McMonster: Kevin Chillis scored five times during a 26-carry, 429-yard performance as Buffalo McKinley routed Burgard, 40-14. The previous Harvard Cup game rushing mark was 343 yards by Kensington’s Kevin Jamison in 1987.

Chillis, who began the season as a receiver and ran for 254 yards a week earlier against Hutch-Tech, scored on runs of 2, 70, 27, 66 and 60 yards. He had 15 carries for 252 yards and two scores in the first half as McKinley built a 20-14 lead.

Carmel survives: Mahopac quarterback Tim Taps' two-point conversion pass with :11 to play fell incomplete, preserving Carmel's 35-33 win over the state's No. 25 Class AA squad.

It was the second straight year the Rams defense stopped Mahopac in the final seconds. The Indians blocked a field-goal attempt with 1:10 to go and then drove to a one-yard Justin Autera TD run to cut the margin to 35-33.

"I've been coaching here for 16 years, and every game has been just like this," Carmel coach Todd Cayea said of the series vs. Mahopac. "This was just another classic."

Carmel junior R.J. Krauss rushed for 206 yards, including 141 in the first half to build a 21-7 lead.

Saturday's rapid recap: Class D No. 14 Tuckahoe, reeling from losses to Dobbs Ferry and Rye Neck, got a 24-yard TD pass from Anthony Gentile to Richard Bray with 1:40 to play to fend off Bronxville, 14-12. The win was the 100th for John D'Arco, who has spent seven seasons at Tuckahoe and was at Eastchester from 1984-93.

Clay Ardoin ran 24 times for 221 yards and four touchdowns as No. 4 Dolgeville beat No. 10 Utica Notra Dame in Class D, 42-14. Ardoin ran 44 yards in the first quarter and opened the secord quarter with a one-yard scoring carry for a 14-0 lead.

Nick Finger ran for 289 yards and two touchdowns to lead Millbrook past Liberty, 30-20.

Rye, No. 1 in Class B, topped Ardsley, 35-6, for its 54th straight victory against Section 1 competition. Senior fullback Kyle Ramalho (17 carries, 99 yards) opened the scoring with TD runs of two and three yards.

Terrell Williams' third TD of the game and 18th of the season was a 101-yard interception return as Hempstead earned a 27-7 triumph against Freeport, No. 22 in Class AA, to leave both squads 5-1. "He's the best player I've seen since I've been here," said sixth-year coach Antoine Moore, a Hempstead star from 1985-87. "I thought I was a pretty good running back, but he's far greater."

Class AA No. 1 Orchard Park continued to impress with a 47-6 romp over Niagara-Wheatfield. Kyle Hoppy (8-for-10, 127 yards) threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and Jeff Tundo (22 carries, 148 yards) ran for three scores. Orchard Park registered 423 yards of total offense.

Grand Island's Alex Neutz had eight catches for 229 yards and three TDs and also scored on a 33-yard interception return to beat Niagara Falls, 26-0. Joe Oliverio was 10-of-16 for 224 passing yards.

Class C No. 6 Cleveland Hill survived against Cheektowaga JFK, 22-14, finally taking the lead on Peter Westbrooks’ five-yard run with 3:35 left.
