Friday, Nov. 7, 2008: Aquinas vs. Victor, Section 5 Class A football final live blog
Weather conditions are extremely mild. Game-time temperature will be in the range of 54-56 degrees, and the rain that's expected tonight doesn't figure to roll in before midnight.

Apologies in advance if we experience lapses in updates tonight. There appears to be an issue with the wireless network at the stadium. We're using a workaround for now as of 8:30 p.m.

First quarter: Victor will kick off to open the game.

Aquinas begins at its own 25. Aquinas mixing runs and three passes in the first five plays. Ben Bostick's QB sneak gains a first down to the 46, and then Casey Vogl rips a 54-yard TD run straight up the middle for a TD. Extra point by Brandon Lockerby good. Seven plays and 75 yards on the drive. Aquinas 7, Victor 0, 8:43 left.

Victor strings together a solid drive of its own. Chris Rose throws for three first downs and caps the nine-play, 62-yard drive with a six-yard TD throw to Adam Brien. Kollin Sullivan's extra-point attempt is good. Eight plays and 62 yards. Victor 7, Aquinas 7 with 6:48 left.

Wow. Fullback Dan Young answers on the first play for Aquinas, blasting 66 yards straight up the gut and untouched for a score. Extra point is good. Aquinas 14, Victor 7 with 6:29 left.

Victor was moving again, driving from its 35 to the Irish 21 when Rose was intercepted, throwing behind David Vistocco. Dwayne Smith makes the pick and returns it five yards.

Bostick scrambles on third and long, makes a spinning escape from Victor's David Sweet to gain 16 to the Aquinas 23. On the next play, Vogl sweeps right and goes straight down the sideline, again barely touched for 77 yards and his second TD. Extra point good. Aquinas 21, Victor 7 with 3:23 left.

Aquinas is easily over 200 yards on the ground already.

Victor comes back with another sustained drive as Rose, working out of the shotgun, is finding receiving options. The Blue Devils drive from their 28 to first down at the Aquinas 5. The Irish appear to have stopped Victor on downs, but Devin Worthington is called for pass interference while defending Vistocco at the goal line to give Victor a fresh set of downs at the 2 with :03 to go. The call is iffy enough that they don't show the replay on the scoreboard, which is consistent with the policy on close calls.

Second quarter: Chuck Beckwith scores on a one-yard run on the first play of the quarter. Extra point is good. Victor 14, Aquinas 21 with 11:51 left.

Aquinas drives to a 32-yard Lockerby field goal. One play earlier, it looked like Bostick may have hit Anthony Bianchi with a 15-yard TD pass on the left edge of the end zone but the junior WR was ruled out of bounds. Give him credit for a super effort though. Drive covered 41 yards in eight plays. Aquinas 24, Victor 14 with 8:27 left.

Finally a defensive stop at the Victor 27, helped by a Dan Young sack of Rose. Aquinas will start at its 39 after the punt with 5:33 to go.

The Irish give it back two plays later on a Vogl fumble at the Victor 41; Matt Souvannavong came out of the pile with the ball.

Victor picks up a first down on a short Beckwith run on fourth down at the 50 to keep the drive alive. Rose to Brad Ford gains 16 to the Aquinas 14, and Rose to Adam Brien nets nine more. Next play, Beckwith plunges in from the 5. Extra point is good. Drive is 10 plays for 59 yards. Victor 21, Aquinas 24 with 1:50 to play.

Rose is roughly 15-for-25 for about 135 yards already.

Aquinas starts at its 25 with 1:48 left in the half. Three short runs get it out to the 36 for a first down. Timeout Aquinas with :36 left in the half. Vogl rips off a 16-yard draw into Victor territory. Two Bostick throws to Bianchi on the left gain 16 yards to the 32.

Lockerby lines up a 44-yard field-goal attempt from the left hash and misses wide right as time expires. He had plenty of leg on the attempt.

What a half if you love offensive battles. Second half will start at approximately 10:35 p.m.

Some halftime stats for Victor: Rose is 16-for-25 for 143 yards and 1 TD, 1 INT; Beckwith has 18 carries for 92 yards and Vistocco has seven catches for 60 yards. Aquinas QB Bostick is 8-for-12 for 60 yards. Vogl has rushed 11 times for 183 yards and the two long scores, with Young getting four carries for 73 yards. Bianchi has six catches for 46 yards.

  •    Victor holds an 18-12 lead in first downs but Aquinas leads the yardage race, 342-247, thanks to 282 yards on the ground.

Third quarter: Believe it out not, a three-and-out. Victor punts and Aquinas starts at its own 33. Two short runs set up a Bostick keeps it to the left, cuts back to the right, picks up a wall of blockers and goes 59 yards for the score. Extra point good. Aquinas 31, Victor 21 with 9:35 left.

Bad idea by Rose, throwing deep on third-and-6 from midfield. Ball is badly overthrown, intended for Vistocco and picked off by Dwayne Smith. Irish will start at their 44.

Holding penalty is a drive killer and Aquinas punts. Fair catch by Zac Hess and Victor will start at its 30 with 5:48 left in the third.

Rose engineers a 69-yard drive ending with a seven-yard throw to Brien, dragging right to left in the back of the end zone. Key play was a seven-yard screen to Hess that had a 15-yard facemask penalty tacked onto it to put the ball at the Aquinas 28. Extra point good. Victor 28, Aquinas 31 with 2:32 left in the third.

Quarter ends with Aquinas driving form its 35 and standing at fourth-and-6 at the Victor 20. Bostick and Smith had teamed up on a 33-yard play to the 24.

Fourth quarter: Bostick throws incomplete, Aquinas turns it over on downs. Two plays later, Devon Worthington steps in front of a Rose throw and returns the INT to the Blue Devils 20 with 11:15 left.

Two Vogl runs get a fresh set of downs at the 10. But drive stalls out again. Bianchi makes another great grab, this time on the left edge of the end zone vs. double coverage, but he's ruled out of bounds again. Lockerby's 38-yard FG attempt is hooked left with 8:58 to go.

Victor on the move from its 21, driving five plays to the Aquinas 37. Drive ends after a one-yard gain and three incompletions with 6:47 left.

Aquinas starts on its 36 but goes three-and-out and punts.

Victor to start at its 28. Crushing offensive pass interference call on first down ruins any chance at putting together a drive. Victor punts and Aquinas will start at the Victor 47 with 3:42 left.

Aquinas is trying to kill the clock but has to call a timeout to talk over a third-and-3 play at the Victor 40 with 2:24 remaining. Bostick fumbles a low snap and throws incomplete. The Irish puny and the ball rolls dead inside the 10, but its called back by illegal procedure.

Victor gets it back at its 21 with 1:56 left. Rose in in passing mode, going 3-for-4 for 44 yards. Victor timeout with 1:20 to go, second-and-7 at the Aquinas 32.

Rose to Brien picks up 17 yards to the Aquinas 9 with :25 left. Field goal is a possibility but Victor's kicking game is not especially strong.

Rose incomplete for Brien in the back of the end zone, left side. Smith defended on the play. As an aside, Smith has been outstanding tonight.

Second down: Chris Bostick picks off a Rose throw to the right side and brings it back 92 yards for the score with :01 left. Incredible ending to the game.

Extra point good. Final score: Aquinas 38, Victor 28.    Game over at 11:41 p.m.

Some final stats: Aquinas' Ben Bostick 11-for-21 for 94 yards. AQ running back Casey Vogl 21 carries for 204 yards. Victor's Rose goes 32-for-55 for 298 yards and two TDs, but four interceptions. Beckwith ra 28 times for 126 yards.

Victor had 31 first downs to 16 for Aquinas but was outgained 474 to 459 yards. Victor was 9-for-17 on third- or fourth-down conversions.

Victor ran 89 plays on offense to 55 for Aquinas.
