Monday, Nov. 24, 2008: Pearl Washington to coach girls team this season
Leading off today: Thomas Jefferson High in Brooklyn has named Dwayne "Pearl" Washington to coach its girls basketball team, The Daily News reported over the weekend.

The fomer Boys & Girls and Syracuse University hero, who had a brief NBA career, was a surprise selection on the eve of the season. Rueben McLaughlin, a former coach at Abraham Lincoln, had coached Jefferson players in tournaments over the summer and had been running preseason practices at the school.

McLaughlin was suspended from his coaching job at Lincoln in January 2004 after the PSAL accused him of recruiting a player who was on active roster at Bishop Loughlin, the paper reported. The player in question didn't appear in a game for Loughlin that season and left the school due to financial difficulties, but McLaughlin was disciplined and Lincoln forfeited two games.

"I respect Pearl Washington," McLaughlin said. "I grew up watching him play basketball. Pearl and I are friends. I recommended Pearl if it wasn't going to be me."

Washington has in recent seasons been a teacher's assistant at Canarsie. At Jefferson, he inherits a team in transition. Calvin Young abruptly resigned last season after the holiday break, leaving boys coaches Lawrence Pollard and Seldon Jefferson to guide the team to the PSAL tournament and a loss to Manhattan Center in the "AA" semifinals, 56-53.

Bethlehem coach resigns: Ron Smith, head football coach at Bethlehem for seven years after seven seasons as an assistant, told his players on Sunday that he is stepping down to spend more time with his family and working on gaining his education administrative certificate.

He was 26-37 in seven seasons.

The Times Union also reported that Catholic Central coach Sam Marro will not be retained after going 14-40 in six seasons, including 1-8 in 2008.

Ex-Long Island star found dead: Will Barrow, 22, a former Baldwin football and lacrosse standout who starred later in lacrosse for the University of Virginia, was found dead in Charlottesville, Va., his family said.

Barrow was a three-year starter on the Baldwin football team and set a school record with 22 career interceptions. He was MVP of the 2004 New York City-Long Island all-star game. In lacrosse, he scored 40 goals as a senior and was an honorable mention All-American.

Newsday reported authorities are investigating his death as an apparent suicide.

Maple Grove connection: One of the stories coming out of the weekend state football semifinals was the ease with which Maple Grove downed defending state champion Walton in Class D at PAETEC Park in Rochester.

Coach Curt Fischer's Red Dragons broke to a 28-6 lead in the first half and won going away, 49-14. Afterward, Fischer placed a phone call to sixth-year Southwestern

  • coach Jay Sirianni, who was a second-year assistant at Maple Grove in 1998 when the Red Dragons won their only NYSPHSAA championship.

"I haven't felt like this in 10 years since I was at Maple Grove," Sirianni said after his Trojans beat Elmira Notre Dame in tthe Class C semifinals. "Curt Fischer called me last night after they won here and he said, 'You're going to do it because we both have to go back.' So this is pretty special."

Sirianni attended Southwestern and then went on to play at Mount Union in Ohio before returning to Western New York to coach at Maple Grove in 1997.

"I think what I learned 10 years ago was to savor it," he said. "I was right out of college, my first coaching job. It was pretty special. I guess I didn't realize it was all I had. I was two years out of college in coaching and we won a state chmmpionship. Now to go back, I'm just going to enjoy it. There are so many special coaches that don't have this kind of opportunity."

Huge game on big stage: Jeffrey Mack posted one of the all-time performances in a football championship game. The junior running back rushed for 393 yards and scored seven touchdowns Saturday to lead Iona Prep to a 48-35 victory against St. Anthony’s for the CHSFL Class AAA championship at Mitchel Field in Uniondale.

It was the first championship for the Gaels (12-0) since 1967.

Mack scored on runs of 50, 17, 11, 48, 71, 19 and 38 yards to boost his season totals to 1,967 yards and 24 touchdowns.

"I have never seen seven touchdowns before," Iona Prep coach Vic Quirolo told The Daily News. "I have never seen somebody make people miss like that."

Parting shot: How best to sum up Syracuse's football victory at Notre Dame over the weekend? This is the outcome I would have expected if the creators of "South Park" were asked to rewrite the screenplay for "Rudy."

Parting shot II: Don't fret for Charlie Weis. If he gets whacked in South Bend, the Syracuse job is still available.

Extra points: This weekend will mark only the second time (2000 was the other) that Section 5 will not have a team playing for a NYSPHSAA football championship. Section 1's run of 13 straight years is the longest active streak. Section 1's only miss in the history of the event was 1995. . . . Former Newsday reporter Jason Molinet is beginning to roll out HoopsLI.com, dedicated to high school basketball in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
