Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008: Lincoln, J-D lead list of No. 1 teams in boys basketball
Leading off today: Abraham Lincoln's quest for a third consecutive Federation championship in boys basketball begins with the Railsplitters holding down the No. 1 position in Class AA in the first New York State Sportswriters Association rankings of the season.

Also holding down No. 1 positions are defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A champion Jamesville-DeWitt, Collegiate (Class B), Avon (Class C) and Maple Grove (Class D). Maple Grove won the NYSPHSAA Class C championship last March in Glens Falls.

Here's a link to the full rankings.

We'll be unveiling the first wrestling rankings tonight.

Award for volleyball standout: Irondequoit junior Mary Cushman has been selected the Gatorade Player of the Year in New York girls volleyball. The 6-foot outside hitter led the Eagles to the NYSPHSAA Class AA championship last month.

She had 339 kills, 233 digs and 56 aces en route to the Eagles' third consecutive Section 5 championship.

Huge blow for Richfield Springs: Center Fred Russ and guard Brandon McNair, cousins who helped Richfield Springs win its first Section 3 boys basketball championship a year ago, have transferred to Center State Conference rival New York Mills, the Observer-Dispatch reported.

New York Mills AD and coach Mike Adey confirmed the family had moved into the district and enrolled in his school. According to the state transfer rule, Russ and McNair would be eligible to play because the family made a corresponding move into that district.

"They’re students in our school, which means they can do anything else a bonafide student in our school can do, and I’m sure they’re going to want to (play)," Adey said.

  •    Russ, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, averaged 13.2 points and a12.4 rebounds a year ago as the team went 21-3. McNair averaged 3.9 assists as a junior.

Richfield Springs and New York Mills play each other Jan. 22 and Feb. 6.

By the way, Adey will be going for for career win No. 400 when New York Mills hosts Poland on Friday.

A feel-good-story: If you're anything like me — and you should probably be praying to God that you're not — you're pretty disgusted with many aspects of sports. From outrageous ticket prices and outlandish contracts in the pro sports to recruiting scandals and contract-breaking coaches in colleges to drug cheats in the Olympics, there's so much to dislike these days.

So when a feel-good story comes along, you embrace it and enjoy it. And that's certainly the case with a brief item Peter King wrote this week for Sports Illustrated.

King told the story of how the Chicago Blackhawks, in the midst of a brutal two-week road trip, elected to give up a rare day off to get on a bus and attend the wake for the father of Chicago general manager Dale Tallon.

Few if any of the players could possibly have had any contact whatsoever with Stan Tallon, but they chose to show their love and resspect for their boss by making the sacrifice.

Pro hockey bores me to tears most nights, but I have to admit I'll be rooting for the Blackhawks a little bit this season.
