Saturday, Sept. 10, 2010: Pittsford's Keating earns national swim honor
Leading off today: Pittsford's Marty Keating has been selected the 2010 National High School Coaches Association national coach of the year for girls swimming.

Keating, who began the Pittsford girls team 36 years ago, has won 15 Section 5 championships, including six straight from 2002-07.

Keating, who is the New York State Coaches Association president, was a finalist for the 2005 national award. He's previously coached the Aquinas and Pittsford boys and currently also coaches the Livonia boys team. With 339 victories, he is the state’s winningest girls coach.

The 11th annual NHSCA awards recognized coaches in a total of 20 boys and girls sports.

Still streaking: The Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team won its 275th consecutive match, defeating Cicero-North Syracuse 7-0 yesterday. The Hornets, 2-0 this fall, are seeking their 17th straight undefeated season and league title.

“There are several very good teams out there so it will be a challenge, but we think we will be ready to play,” veteran coach Phil Rudolph told The Post-Standard.

Contingency plans: What would have been the second annual Battle of the Boulevard was canceled last fall when Tottenville made a run to the PSAL football championship game, but there should be no such snafu this time.

Tottenville will host a Nov. 26 doubleheader, taking St. Joseph by-the-Sea after Susan Wagner and Moore Catholic match up. Gate receipts will go to the Stephen Siller Children's Foundation, which is funding a handicap-accessible house for Army Spc. Brendan Marrocco,

seriously injured in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq last spring, The Advance reported.

If Tottenville is again derailed by the PSAL playoff schedule, Susan Wagner will visit Moore Catholic on Nov. 20 and the winner will take on St. Joe/Sea on Thanksgiving morning.

Improvement plans: Fayetteville-Manlius boosters and residents have needed just three months to raise about $900,000, half the goal toward the installation of a turf field, The Post-Standard reported.

The group’s proposed gift is on the agenda for the F-M school board work session on Monday and could be voted upon the following week.

District residents have voted down two propositions in recent years to fund sports stadium and turf field proposals.

Meanwhile, Fairport is moving closer to installing lights at its stadium field, a prospect that will be discussed at Tuesday's school board meeting.

Local pizza mogul Mark Crane, a Fairport graduate, is putting up much of the money for the lights, but the district has yet to disclose particulars on handling parking, traffic and security.
