Leading off today: And then there were two.
Senior A. Keith Louie drove the length of the floor for a layup and the winning points with 20 seconds left as St. Joe's handed No. 1 Niagara Falls its first loss, 59-58, reducing the ranks of the unbeaten in New York's Class AA boys basketball ranks to just Poughkeepsie and Albany CBA.
The Marauders celebrated senior night by starting five reserves who helped St. Joe's to a 23-19 lead in a fast-paced first quarter. Jack Murray and Brandon Hickey hit 3-pointers and Louie (nine points) scored on a drive.
"To go out as a senior, on your last game on this court, beating the No. 1 team in Western New York, the No. 1 team in the state, is just a great feeling," said senior Connor Rehbaum, who had 16 points for No. 4 large school St. Joe's.
Niagara Falls had possession with :05.8 to play. St. Joe's had a foul to give and used it with :02.4 to go, then Marcus Feagin had the ball knocked away shortly after the inbounds pass, allowing time to expire.
Junior post player Reggie Agbeko paced St. Joe's with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
After the game, St. Joe's (19-5) lost a coin flip to Canisius to determine the top seed for the Manhattan Cup tournament.
J-D on the move: Three-time defending Class A state champion Jamesville-DeWitt, ranked ninth this week by the NYSSWA, capped its regular season with a 71-51 victory over Class AA No. 15 Syracuse CBA to clinch its 12th consecutive Onondaga High School League Freedom National Division crown.
Having overcome a three-game skid in mid-season, J-D enters sectionals with a 15-3 record.
Six-foot-10 junior center Dajuan Coleman had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Rams, who opened a 33-20 lead at halftime. Six-foot-8 Tyler Cavanaugh added 14 points, and senior guard Demetrius Mitchell was stead in his third game back from a broken foot.
“Demetrius brings an element to the game that we don’t have," J-D coach Bob McKenney said. "He’s a great defensive player. He can guard a guard. He can guard a forward. But most importantly, I think, he gets our fast break going again."
Section 1 upsets: Clarkstown South, the No. 14 seed in the Section 1 Class AA boys tournament, scored a 58-56 win over third-seeded Horace Greeley as Mike McCahey scored 30 points and Zach Mager added 19.
McCahey finished 14-for-15 from the foul line and the Vikings were 21-for-25 for the game.
In the girls Class AA tourney, 18th-seeded New Rochelle edged No. 2 seed Arlington, ranked 24th in the state, 62-58 despite 24 points and 11 rebounds from Nicole Spaulding.
Getting it done: Start with a career night from the star senior, mix in two OTs and a buzzer-beater, and it adds up to the Pawling girls edging Croton-Harmon 65-56 in the Section 1 Class B first round.
Margo Hackett scored a career-high 46 points in her final home game, three coming on a 30-footer with under two seconds to play in the first overtime.
Pawling outscored the visitors 12-2 in the second OT.
"It was probably the greatest game I've ever been involved with," Pawling coach Jeff Hackett told The Poughkeepsie Journal. "The whole fourth quarter (and first overtime) was a swing of one or two points, big shot after big shot. It was a matter of who would blink first."
One to go: Cuba-Rushford's Section 5 Class C-2 game Tuesday vs. Geneseo will be more than just a win-or-go-home contest. Rebels coach Gary Wight will be going for his 400th win.
No. 399 came Thursday as Cuba-Rushford beat
