Wednesday, May 9, 2007: Saratoga promotes Jones to head football coach
Leading off today: Long-time assistant Terry Jones has been named the head football coach at Saratoga Springs, replacing Blase Iuliano, who coached there for 37 years.

Jones has been an assistant at Saratoga since 1999. He previously was an assistant at Ballston Spa and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Blue Streaks went 8-2 last fall, losing to Colonie in the Section 2 semifinals. They'll have to replace the entire backfield as well as their starting wideouts.

J-E pitcher stalks 'K' record: Jordan-Elbridge senior pitcher Colleen Ryan is closing in on the presumed state record for career strikeouts after setting down seven batters Monday in a 13-11 win over Altmar-Parish-Williamstown.

The Citizen in Auburn says Ryan is at 1,264 strikeouts through Monday, with the record believed to be 1,278. Ryan will attend Stony Brook in the fall.

Insane score alert: Great Neck South scored 17 runs in

the sixth inning Tuesday to beat Great Neck North in softball, 36-28. Freshman Charlotte Freed led the way, going 4-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI.

SIA baseball goes co-ed: Staten Island Academy has a female outfielder on the baseball team this spring.

Senior Maria Vasaturo, who stands 5-foot-2, is believed to be the first female to play baseball for a Staten Island varsity squad. Vasaturo, who will attend Fordham in the fall, is 0-for-2 at the plate this spring for SIA, which has not fielded a softball team since 2004.

Extra points: Iroquois beat Williamsville East, 89-52, giving girls track coach Tom Wood his 100th dual-meet victory. He's 100-25 in 21 seasons. . . . Robert J. Wolstromer, 40, of Coram has been arrested and charged with harassment after repeatedly following girls from Sayville's soccer team, Suffolk County police said. Players said they noticed Wolstromer tailing them in his car as far back as September. He was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court June 27.
