Monday, March 7, 2011: Catching up on weekend action, part II
Leading off today: Bring a book and maybe pack a lunch when you attend a New York State Public High School Athletic Association hockey tournament game involving West Genesee.

The Wildcats beat Shenendehowa in the 2008 Division I quarterfinals in four overtimes and lost the final that same year to Massena in triple OT; a year ago, West Genny needed "only" one OT to eliminate Suffern in the semifinals and won the title the next afternoon.

On Saturday, it was West Genny's turn to experience the disappointment of losing in quadruple overtime. Scott Sims scored 46 seconds into the fourth extra session to give Williamsville North a 2-1 win in the Division I quarterfinals at the Northtown Center. North has lost its 2010 quarterfinal in an overtime battle with Suffern.

Spartans goalie Parker Gahagen gave up his first goal in four playoff games this winter but finished with 26 saves as the team advanced to next weekend's semifinals in Utica.

Williamsville East also advanced with an overtime victory, edging Webster Thomas 3-2 in Division II action.

Bowling: Tyler Mochrie and Matt Olson averaged 198.5 and 196.2, respectively, to lead Colonie to the boys team championship in the state tournament at AMF Strike-N-Spare Lanes in Syracuse.

Colonie totaled 5,944 for a six-game block to top Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (5,800) and Waverly (5,799). Jared Joseph of Waverly had the top score during team competition, averaging 226.5 with the held of a 238-236-257 block in the second half of his set.

Colonie's girls aslo earned a team title, rolling up 5,576 pins to easily outdistance Union-Endicott (5,350). Kalynn Carl led the way for the winners, averaging 200.2 for six games to finish second overall to Erica Schneider (202.7) of Levittown Division.

In Sunday's sections competition, Jeremy Milito of Sachem East and Sabrina Williams of Camden posted the top series of 1,377 and 1,230, respectively. The Section 11 boys and Section 2 girls finished first.

Girls gymnastics: Nanuet junior Taylor Redmond became the third straight Section 1 competitor to win the

all-around championship in Saturday's state gymnastics meet at Shaker High. Redmond won the uneven bars and balance beam and was co-champion on the floor exercise en route to 38.225 points.

Cydney Crasa of Ward Melville was second in the all-around with 37.225 points.

Tappan Zee's Jillian Hudson and Mahopac's Kylie Shields won the all-around the previous two years.

Redmond's effort helped Section 1 win the team scoring for the second straight year and sixth time in eight years.

Random basketball note: I wasn't in town to see it, but I understand the local chapter of the Future Felons of America stirred up trouble midway through Saturday's seven Section 5 boys basketball games at Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester.

Regrettably, we seem to experience one of these affairs almost every year now, with students and supporters from a couple of schools in particular traditionally instigating and police having to swarm downtown to restore order. Is it any wonder that most of the local colleges want no part of hosting Section 5 games anymore?

Go ahead and attend Wednesday's state qualifier games if you'd like. Pepper spray is optional. You have the Rochester City School District teams to thank for that.
