Tuesday, March 22, 2011: Boys & Girls loses nearly half its roster to grades
Leading off today: Boys & Girls will be short-handed in the Federation basketball tournament this weekend.

The Kangaroos, who play Mount Vernon in the boys Class AA semifinals for the right to meet Christ the King in the final, will only be bringing nine players to Albany after losing seven others to academic ineligibility, Department of Education spokesperson Margie Feinberg confirmed to The New York Post on Tuesday.

Principal Bernarnd Gassaway declined to comment, and the paper's calls to coach Ruth Lovelace were not returned. But among the players affected are starting forward Jeffland Neverson, sixth man Anthony Hemingway and sophomore Teyvon Myers. Reserve forward Nkosi Brown and backup point guard Dykweil Brown are also out, the paper reported.

Academics have been a season-long worry for Boys & Girls. Hemingway and point guard Antione Slaughter each missed five games -- including the entire Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Rutgers recruit Mike Taylor missed six games in a ban that extended into the PSAL playoffs.

Canisius football change: Fourth-year Canisius High football coach Brandon Harris told his players today he is leaving, The Buffalo News reported.

In a statement e-mailed to the paper, Harris said he was pursuing other opportunities. AD Jim Mauro said the school would be conducting a search for a replacement as soon as possible.

  •    Harris inherited a team that was 1-7 in the 2006 season, and he compiled a 26-16 mark with one Monsignor Martin Association Class AA championship and two other trips to the final. Canisius was 7-3 last fall, losing to St. Joe's in the MMA semifinals.

More coaching news: Woodlands football coach Phil Treglia is leaving after two seasons to take a similar role at Hackley, The Journal News reported.

The former Iona Prep assistant replaces Rob Pickert, who had a 38-year run on the job.

"What attracted me to Hackley was the stability, the tradition, and being at a program that has such a solid foundation," Treglia told the paper. "I want to be part of something that has a solid foundation and will be committed to the same principles Coach Pickert was moving forward."

Woodlands improved from 1-6 to 6-4 in Treglia's two seasons. The team won on homecoming weekend for the first time in more than two decades.
