Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011: MPH's Ridall wins 500th soccer game

Leading off today: Manlius Pebble Hill boys soccer coach Don Ridall picked up his 500th career victory Monday with a 6-2 win against Bishop Ludden. Richie Medina scored a pair of goals in the contest.

"I’d be lying if I said this didn’t mean anything," said Ridall, who is in his 36th season on the job. "It is special. There were a lot of parents and former players at the game, and I’ve received just a ton of (text) messages since it ended."

After a 1-8-1 mark in his first season, Ridall's teams won state championships in 2000 and 2001 and six Section 3 titles. He is second to Mount Markham's Charlie Engle (597) on the list of active Section 3 soccer coaches.

Section 4 football: Paul Wonka rushed for 204 yards, including a 21-yard TD, as Oxford rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Unadilla Valley/Edmeston 28-19 in a game rescheduled from the weekend due to flooding in the Southern Tier.

Oxford the lead for good on Jodie Smith's 15-yard pass to Adam Pierson late in the second quarter, then Jarrid Shepherd returned an interception 42 yards for a TD on the final play of the first half for a 21-13 advantage.

Two to BC: Boston College, ranked nationally in the top 10, has reached into New York for a pair of men's soccer recruits. Hackley midfielder Daniel Norris recently committed to play at BC along with Iona Prep senior goalkeeper Alex Kapp, a nearly life-long friend, in 2012.

"We definitely talked about it a lot," Norris told The Journal News. "Just knowing that one of your best friends is also going to the school, that was definitely one of the main factors."

Norris and Kapp are members of the FC Westchester club, and Norris recently trained for three weeks in Germany with the Frankfurt U-19 team.

Receiving record set: Cortland's Qwuhail Barlow grabbed 11 passes for a state-record 321 yards in Saturday's 48-38 loss to Whitesboro. The senior scored four touchdowns on throws from Devon Darrow, covering 8, 48, 63 and 86 yards.

Barlow’s yardage total broke the mark of 305 yards by Derek Smith of Sayville against Harborfields in 1972. Darrow's nine other completions went for a total of 46 yards, giving him 367 for the game.

Whitesboro senior running back Steve Almond carried 20 times for 319 yards and TDs of 35, 45, 58 and 69 yards. The Warriors piled up 590 yards of total offense to 412 for Cortland.

Annual media reminder: Reporters across the state are reminded that the deadline is approaching for requesting championship credentials from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

Legitimate media must fill out the form at http://nysphsaa.org/media/ by Sept. 25 in order to receive a credential good for the 2011-12 school year. Reporters and photographers will still need to contact the NYSPHSAA media coordinator for the appropriate sport before each event to confirm they will be covering the championship.

Extra points: Aquinas senior basketball point guard Christian White committed to Monmouth Monday night, Zagsblog.com reported. White's reputation for gritty play was enhanced after after he played well for Albany City Rocks on the AAU circuit.
