Leading off today: Queensbury senior Charlie Peltz threw his third consecutive no-hitter on Monday -- presumably setting a state record (
Editors note: See Wednesday update) -- during a 2-0 victory over Hudson Falls.
Peltz, who is 7-0 for the season, struck out 15 batters and walked four in his encore to no-hitters last week vs. Glens Falls and South Glens Falls. Counting the conclusion of his appearance previous to the string of no-hitters, Peltz has gone 23 innings without surrendering a hit, The Post-Star reported.
“I’ve always had my stuff, but I’ve never located as well as I am right now,” Peltz told the newspaper. “I throw my fastball on the corners ... trying to spot my curve ball and everything, so it’s starting to come together.”
At least three other hurlers -- Luke Godlewski (Little Falls), Matt Crohan (Riverhead) and Stephen Woods (Half Hollow Hills East) -- threw consecutive no-hitters earlier this season but were unable to pull off the hat trick.
More on consecutive no-nos: J.C. Pena threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters for Westhill in a 1-0 baseball victory over Marcellus on Senior Day for the Warriors.
Pena, who is 4-0 on the mound, went 2-for-2 with a triple and scored the game's only run.
In the Warriors' previous game, senior Ben Walsh threw a no-hitter to beat Chittenango.
Greenport legend retires: AD Robbie Costantini confirmed Monday that Al Edwards has submitted his retirement papers as a coach and physical education teacher, presumably ending a remarkable career at Greenport.
“He’s an icon,” Costantini told the Suffolk Times. “Are you kidding me? Greenport basketball, Al Edwards.”
Edwards, 59, could not be immediately reached for comment.
At the time of his graduation from Greenport in 1972, Edwards was Section 11's career scoring leader with 2,117 points, a mark that stood for 17 seasons until Kenny Wood of East Hampton broke it.
Edwards went on to coach at Greenport, taking over the varsity in 1979, and was on the bench when his school scoring record fell to Ryan Creighton (2,799) in 2009.
He is believed to have finished with a 343-252 record in 34 seasons, taking the Porters to the NYSPHSAA final fours in Glens Falls three times.
Well, so much for that: West Genesee and Syracuse CBA were supposed to face off in a fairly intriguing non-league boys tennis match Monday, but the coaches couldn't agree on the rules so they picked up their marbles and went home without actually playing.
