Leading off today: The Albany girls basketball team, ranked eighth in the state in Class AA, has been playing shorthanded as six members of the team are serving suspensions,
The Times Union reported.
Albany coach Decky Lawson told the paper five players are serving three-week suspensions, the most notable being starting point guard Ayanna Hunter, a first-team all-area pick last winter as a freshman. A sixth player is serving a 10-week suspension.
Lawson said the punishments were administered by principal Cecily Wilson and AD Kathleen Ryan for violations of the school's code of conduct. The players have missed four games beginning with a 65-30 victory vs. Amsterdam on Jan. 14.
The five players serving the shorter suspensions are expected back Feb. 7 against Troy, ranked fifth in Class A.
Re-writing the book: Canisius senior Jack Boyd completed his overhaul of the Monsignor Martin Association record book for boys freestyle swimming events on Saturday.
Boyd's win in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.26 seconds at the Blazer Invitational in Cleveland gave him the only league mark he had not yet already owned. Boyd had previously broken the MMA marks in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles.
Boyd also won the 100 freestyle in :46.38 Saturday.
Rivalry game: Jack Dugan and Tyler Gokey each registered a goal and an assist to lead McQuaid past Aquinas 4-3 in boys ice hockey action between state-ranked teams. McQuaid is fifth in Division I and Aquinas second in Division II in the most recent state rankings.
Jimmy Lockamyeir scored a goal at 3:15 in the first period and Christian Leonardi scored short-handed two minutes later to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Wrestling: Tyler Silverthorn (152 pounds) and Zech Pitre (220) each pinned four opponents to spark General Brown to its first Section 3 Dual Meet wrestling championship at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Top-seeded General Brown defeated second seed Central Valley Academy 39-31 in the final. In the semifinals, General Brown defeated defending champ South Jefferson 40-33.
Connor Schissler (113) , Ryan Snow (126), Kyle
