Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016: Surprises shake up the top of Class C (con't)

[Continued from Page 1]

Class AA: In the biggest PSAL game of the season to date, 10th-ranked Curtis withstood a 30-point run by No. 4 Erasmus Hall to pull out a 44-42 win.

After Erasmus Hall turned a 30-12 deficit into a 42-20 lead, Warriors QB Quincy Barnes hit Justin Mitchell for a 12-yard TD pass to halve the deficit and ran in a fourth-and-goal keeper from the Erasmus 1 with :40 left to tie the game. On the conversion attempt, Barnes scrambled and hit Amad Anderson down the middle, deep in the end zone.

    • On Long Island, No. 3 Farmingdale held off a second-half comeback and edged Hempstead 22-20. Jordan McLune ran 18 times for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Bellport overwhelmed No. 19 North Babylon 50-14 as Jimmy Morrell carried 13 times for 75 yards and the game's first two TDs.

    • Sophomore Dylann Wynn returned an interception 71 yards to set up the game-tying score and senior quarterback Richie Martucci rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns on 14 attempts to lead No. 23 Monroe-Woodbury to a 35-13 victory over No. 25 Washingtonville in the Section 9 semifinals.

Senior running back Johnny Bauer gained 92 yards on 27 carries for a Monroe-Woodbury team that ran 42 times for 305 yards.

    • Scarsdale routed Arlington, ranked 14th, 41-7 to reach the Section 1 final. Barry Klein threw two touchdowns and ran for an 82-yard score on the second play of the game.

Class A: Top-ranked Sayville kept rolling with a 35-7 win over No. 14 Westhampton as Wisconsin-bound quarterback Jack Coan (15-for-23, 167 yards, three TDs) threw three second-half touchdown passes and Ashton Bradley rushed for 134 yards and two scores.

Perennial Section 2 threat Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, ranked 18th by the NYSSWA, reached the final with a 42-24 win over previously unbeaten Queensbury. Running backs Vincent Daviero and Jacob Stanko combined to rush for 358 yards and six touchdowns to power Burnt Hills, which turned three interceptions into second-half touchdowns.

Tame by comparison: The first time the teams met this fall, James I. O'Neill beat Marlboro 63-43. Scoring was way down when they got together in the Section 9 Class B semifinals, and No. 22 Marlboro came away with a 17-6 win.

Sam Mongelli threw for one score and ran 33 yards for another to build a 14-0 lead. He tacked on a 27-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter vs. No. 16 O'Neill.

Marlboro will go for its sixth straight sectional title Friday vs. No. 14 New Paltz, which advanced with a 35-13 semifinal victory over No. 19 Liberty.

  •    Jimmy Verney, who had TD runs of 27, 95 and 5 yards, finished with 183 yards on 16 carries. He also completed 6 of 9 passes for 107 yards.

More Class B: Sixth-ranked Batavia overcame a sluggish first half and defeated Livonia 31-20. QB Jerry Reinhart rushed for 73 yards and threw for 121 with one touchdown as the Blue Devils rallied from a 14-8 deficit at the half.

Batavia's only first-half points came on a 71-yard kickoff return from Chandler Baker.

        • Winston Britton returned interceptions 99 and 65 yards for touchdowns for No. 9 Hackley in a 41-40 win over Montclair (N.J.) Kimberley. The second TD turned out to be the winning points as Hackley completed an undefeated season.

Scoreboards: Here's the rundown of scores from Week 9 of the season. In addition, here's how the New York State Sportswriters Association's ranked teams fared.

Also noteworthy: Maine-Endwell's string of six Section 4 championships ended with a 41-16 loss to Windsor in the Class B semifinals.

In the Monsignor Martin Association, St. Francis outlasted Bishop Timon/St. Jude 54-44 as Dylan McDuffie finished with six touchdowns. Five came on runs, and a sixth was one of two touchdown passes thrown by Jerry Hickson.
