Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016: Clarence's Davies scores 4 in soccer quarterfinals

Leading off today: Senior Ana Davies scored all the Clarence goals in a 4-1 victory over Victor on Friday in the NYSPHSAA girls Class AA soccer quarterfinals.

Clarence defeated Victor 1-0 in the 2015 quarterfinals. Davies, who'll attend Marist next fall, has 38 goals in leading the Red Devils to their third straight berth in the semifinals.

Clarence is riding a 17-game winning streak.

More girls soccer: Massapequa defeated Northport 3-2 in the state quarterfinals to win its fourth straight Long Island Class AA title and sixth in eight years.

Morgan Camarda converted a rebound with 2:34 left in the first half to build a 2-1 lead, and the Chiefs got what proved to be the winner less than five minutes into the second half when freshman Sierra Brophy scored for the fourth straight contest.

    • Garden City has now played 460 minutes of postseason soccer without allowing a goal following a 1-0 victory over Mount Sinai in the Class A quarterfinals. Gracie McManus gathered a loose ball and scored with 16:12 remaining in the first half for her first varsity goal.

Boys soccer: Grand Island, which hasn't lost since the 2015 New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals, is back in the final four.

The Vikings advanced with a 2-1 win over Greece Athena in the state quarterfinals, sparked by an Anthony Emmi goal 25 seconds into the contest.

"It was one of the most exciting moments of my life," Emmi told The Buffalo News. "It was super important. Being up kind of got the nerves out of us, and it was good to take the lead."

Less than six minutes later, Lou Fabiano added to the lead with a goal of his own.

Close call for 'Toga: The Saratoga girls won their 17th consecutive Section 2 cross country championship, but it wasn't easy.

Sophomore Kelsey Chmiel repeated as the individual Class A champion as the Streaks scored 47 points to edge Shenendehowa (50) and Niskayuna (58) at Saratoga Spa State Park.

  •    Chmiel covered the 4.9-kilometer course in 16:47.71 and Saratoga placed four others in the top 15. Shen runners took four of the top seven spots but the No. 5 scorer came in 33rd.

Injury study: A study from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health concludes that high school athletes who specialize in a single sport sustain lower-body injuries at much higher rates than athletes who compete in multiple sports.

The study funded by the National Federation of State High School Associations Foundation, tracked more than 1,500 student athletes at 29 Wisconsin high schools last school year.

       From the study:

"Athletes who specialized in one sport were twice as likely to report previously sustaining a lower-extremity injury while participating in sports (46%) than athletes who did not specialize (24%). In addition, specialized athletes sustained 60 percent more new lower-extremity injuries during the study than athletes who did not specialize."

More to come: We'll return later Saturday with some highlights from football playoff action around the state. The Week 10 results page can be found here.

Extra points: Eastridge football coach Chad Green has stepped down after 11 seasons as football coach at the Section 5 school, the district announced on Twitter. He won a pair of Section 5 championships.
