Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016: Dunkirk outlasts Batavia 50-48 in overtime

Leading off today: Alton Ingram's 16-yard run and 2-point conversion in overtime proved to be the difference Saturday as Dunkirk outslugged Batavia 50-48 at New Era Field to advance to the NYSPHSAA Class B football semifinals.

After Ingram put Dunkirk on top 50-42, Batavia quarterback Jerry Reinhart scored on a 3-yard dive. But his pass on the conversion attempt fell incomplete to end the wild display of offensive firepower that began with six first-quarter TDs.

Dunkirk outgained the Blue Devils 501-470.

Ingram finished the night with 240 yards on 33 carries and scored four touchdowns. His first came on a 60-yard scamper that put the Marauders ahead 16-12 just 3:41 into the game.

Another Ingram TD run, this time from 6 yards out, capped a 12-play, 69-yard drive to knot the score at 34-34 for 9:35 to play. Dunkirk retook the lead with 2:33 left on a 5-yard pass from QB Evon Hernandez (5-for-7, 119 yards and 2 TDs) to Dontrell Clemons on 4th-and-goal. Ingram added the conversion run.

But Batavia drove 62 yards to tie the game as Reinhart (14 carries, 131 yards) found Ray Leach from 11 yards out on 4th-and-6. A halfback pass from Leach to Chandler Baker on the conversion squared the score again with :16 left on the clock.

More Class B: Sophomore quarterback Joseph Girard III passed for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 129 more yards and another score to lead Glens Falls past Peru 48-19. Glens Falls rolled to a 34-0 lead and advanced despite amassing 13 penalties for 120 yards.

    • Chenango Forks is into the NYSPHSAA semifinals for the 13th time in 24 seasons after a 35-13 win over defending champ Cazenovia.

Forks, which won the past three Class C titles, scored twice late in the second quarter to take a 28-0 lead. L.J. Watson rushed 19 times for 140 yards and scored on an interception runback that covered 65 yards to cap the first-half scoring.

Class AA: Mitch Spindler rushed for 223 yards in Victor's 33-27 win over Lancaster, which rang up more points than the Blue Devils five previous opponents combined (24).

The Legends closed to within 27-20 on their second possession of the second half as Ryan Mansell found Max Giordano for a 35-yard TD. But Victor answered, cashing in Kordell Jackson's second interception of the game with a 4-yard TD run by Zack Estabrooks (19 carries, 63 yards, 3 TDs).

    • John Germinerio threw for two TDs, fan for two and scored another on the defensive side of the ball as Troy built a 29-point lead and downed Newburgh 50-27 to reach its first semifinal since 2010.

Class C: Dahmir Pross scored touchdowns on an 81-yard kickoff return and five short rushes for Bishop Kearney to edge Cleveland Hill 40-38. Pross finished with 165 yards on 28 carries.

The Kings trailed 38-28 with 7:00 left but used a 20-point fourth quarter to advance. Pross' 45-yard run set up his own 5-yard scoring carry with 6:38 left, and the Kings recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Kearney then drove 43 yards to another Pross TD and the lead.

Long Island playoffs: Gerald Filardi completed 11 of 12 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns to lead Half Hollow Hills West over North Babylon 55-34 in the Suffolk II semifinals. Cameron Jordan made four receptions for 172
