Wednesday, April 25, 2007: Bob and Mindy Rich go to bat for H.S. baseball in Buffalo
Congratulations to Buffalo Bisons management for making what could quite possibly be a multimillion-dollar commitment to improve the state of high school baseball in their city.

Bisons co-owner Mindy Rich made the announcement on Monday, saying she wanted Buffalo's public schools to have the best high school baseball program in the northeast. To that end, the Bisons intend to upgrade facilities, supply equipment and uniforms and hire assistant coaches for the district's 12 schools.

In addition, the Bisons will help provide transportation, run camps and sponsor summer leagues. Rich and husband Bob Rich Jr. also recruited New Era Cap Co. to help supply equipment and work on renovation of Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium.

The timing of the announcement was not lost on Buffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan, who noted that Major League Baseball recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. The percentage of blacks in the big leagues peaked at about 30 percent in the 1970s but is now down to 8.4 percent as young athletes gravitate toward football and basketball.

Celtics fire Telfair: The NBA's Boston Celtics have quickly distanced themselves from troubled guard Sebastian Telfair, announcling he was being waived in the aftermath of being arrested in Yonkers and charged with carrying a loaded gun in his car.

Telfair, the 13th pick in the 2004 draft after a stellar career at Lincoln High in Brooklyn, pleaded not guilty to a charge of felony second-degree possession of a weapon, and was released on $7,500 bail Friday.

Telfair's attorney reacted with a ridiculous analogy after the Celtics said they were letting Telfair, 21, go with one year left on his contract.

"It always bothers me when you punish a guy so severely before there's been a finding of fact," Ed Hayes told The Associated Press. "I think that's wrong whether it happens in Durham (N.C) or in Boston."

Um, Ed, none of the players in the Duke lacrosse rape case were found to be carrying a loaded gun. In fact, there was an almost complete lack of physical evidence in that case.

The fact that the handgun is reportedly registered to Telfair's girlfriend may end up giving the player some wiggle room in court and allow him to hook on with another NBA team, but Telfair has bigger problems: Hayes said Telfair supports 17 family members.

I don't know about you, but I'm not sure I even know 17 people that I'd ever consider putting on my payroll. Anyone else get the feeling that, compared to Sebastian Telfair, Lloyd Daniels will one day be remembered as a feel-good tale of New York City basketball success?

Extra points: Cicero-North Syracuse softball coach Kerry Bennett earned career victory No. 500 Tuesday with an 8-1 win over Utica Proctor. Bennett has coached 12 sectional champs and four state titlists in 24 seasons. . . . Haldane's Chelsea Lisikatos struck out 20 and pitched a no-hitter Monday in a 24-1 softball win over Croton-Harmon. She also homered for good measure. . . . The Journal News reports that Westchester County organizers have finalized venues for the Empire State Games, which open three months from today.
