Sunday, June 17, 2007: Steeplechasers, hurdler Muhammad score big at Nike Nationals
Leading off today: New Yorkers piled up the victories over the weekend in the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., with steeplechasers Ryan McDermott and Hannah Davidson leading the way.

McDermott, a Chaminade senior, won the boys' 2,000 steeple in 5:52.63 at North Carolina A&T. Davidson, a Saratoga junior, won the girls race in 6:43.73.

Also on the boys side, St. Anthony's senior weightman Walter Henning picked up yet another victory with a throw of 249 feet in the hammer, and Collegiate's four-mile relay hit the tape in 17:19.42 as senior Chris Williams anchored in 4:15.5.

Among the girls, Benjamin Cardozo junior Dalilah Muhammad scored big by going :57.09 in the 400 hurdles, well below her 1:00.37 a week earlier at the state championships. John Glenn senior Gabriela Baiter added two inches to her state triple jump effort, winning at Nike with a 40-6 1/4, and senior Jenna Monahan (Sachem East) took the racwalk in 7:38.60.

Rice's Walker commits: Rice point guard Kemba Walker will enter his senior season with his mind made up, having committed over the weekend to play basketball for the University of Connecticut.

Walker, a fourth-team NYSSWA all-state selection last season, had also been considering St. John's and Cincinnati. He made up his mind after visiting UConn late last month.

Extra points: The Times Union's Brian Ettkin did a nice takeout Sunday on Brent Steuerwald, the patriarch of Shenendehowa football who has 50 years of coaching under his belt. He's built a 286-72-4 record with 10 sectional championships. . . . The Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester has been doing a periodic series on Churchville-Chili star football player Averin Collier, with the lastest installment delving into new NCAA recruiting restrictions on text messaging.
