Leading off today: Tim Schurr, who coached Somers boys lacrosse into the last two Section 1 finals, will not be retained next season. Schurr told
The Journal News he was
informed of the decision by district Superintendent Joanne Marien.
Schurr, 45, had been an assistant for five years before being named head coach for the 2004 season when he swapped responsibilities with Jim Donohue. Schurr, who last year purchased the former home of Yorktown lacrosse co-founder Charlie Murphy, had previously been an assistant at Yorktown for 14 years.
Schurr compiled a 59-23 record, including 17-4 this spring. His lone sectional title came last year in Class B.
"It caught me off guard," Schurr, who works full time in private business as a contractor, told the newspaper. Asked for a reason, he said, "That's really for them to answer."
Calls to Marien's office were not returned, the paper said.
Windsor coach shocked: Dan Hodack is done after 22 seasons as the top guy on the Windsor football sidelines, and it wasn't his choice to leave. Hodack is being replaced by varsity assistant Tim Hogan, having been notified June 4 by district superintendent Jason Andrews that he would not be recommended for the upcoming season.
Hodack, who retired from teaching in 2004, compiled a 126-84-2 record and won five Section 4 titles.
"I would always say I'm taking it year to year," Hodack told The Press & Sun-Bulletin. "I realized I was in the twilight of my career, but each year I would talk to the coaching staff, and they would say we want you to go out on your terms. I did everything all year to get ready for next season (because) I was led to believe I would be coaching in the fall."
Andrews said he had met with Hodack this spring and said the district was considering a change. He declined to give reasons for not recommending Hodack's return.
