NYSSWA All-State plaques

Sunday, July 1, 2007: Flynn selected for U.S. under-19 basketball team
Leading off today: Niagara Falls' Jonny Flynn has made the roster for the USA Under-19 squad that will play in the 2007 FIBA U-19 World Basketball Championship to be held July 12-22 in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Flynn will be joined by fellow Syracuse University recruit Donte' Greene of Towson Catholic High in Baltimore. Eight of the 12 roster spots were grabbed by players with a season of college ball under their belts.

The U-19 squad plays China's national team -- including 7-foot-6 NBA star Yao Ming -- in an exhibition tonight in Dallas.

The champion of champions: Led by a 4-for-5 showing in girls soccer, teams from Section 5 earned 11 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships during the 2006-07 school year. Section 1 finished second with nine NYSPHSAA titles.

Rockville Centre South Side girls soccer won its 13th championship in the fall season, moving to within one of West Genesee boys lacrosse and Saratoga Springs girls cross country for the most titles all-time.

The list of all NYSPHSAA champions since 1950 is available in a PDF format courtesy of New York State Sportswriters Association statistician/historian Steve Grandin.

Want to help? The NYSSWA is seeking a New York City-area scholastic sports correspondent to compile weekly football and boys basketball rankings during the 2007-08 school year.

The pay is nothing to brag about ($100), but the honor is something special -- you're taking the place of the legendary Burt Beagle, who died in February.

If you're up to the challenge, call NYSSWA editor Neil Kerr weeknights at (315) 470-2153.

Extra points: In Staten Island news, Frank Duffy, 32, has been named the boys' soccer coach at Petrides. He replaces Nick Kvasic, the only coach in the program's seven-year history. Kvasic had to give up the post due to the public school teachers' union contract and will remain the girls coach at New Dorp.
