Wednesday, July 30, 2008: U.S. agency plays down lead risk from artificial turf
   Leading off today: Children are not at risk from lead exposure from artificial turf, according to a nationwide assessment by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, USA Today reported today.

   "Our message is: Go out and play," CPSC spokeswoman Julie Vallese said. "Parents should not be concerned about harmful levels of lead in artificial turf."

   Newer fields "generally had the lowest levels," the CPSC report said. "Although small amounts of lead were detected on the surface of older fields, none of these tested fields released amounts of lead that would be harmful to children."

   The CPSC evaluated 40 turf samples and tested nine at its labs in Maryland. Its investigation began after two fields in New Jersey were closed because state health regulators found high levels of lead in turf fiber samples this spring.

   The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also launched an investigation, the results of which are expected this fall, a spokesman said.

   Adirondack coach dies unexpectedly: Adirondack High girls basketball and softball coach Tom Maurer, 59, died Tuesday morning while recuperating from hip surgery last week, The Observer-Dispatch reported.

   Maurer coached two sports at South Lewis before going to Adirondack, where at various times he guided the boys soccer, modified football, baseball, boys and girls basketball and softball teams. He had coached girls varsity basketball there for 11 seasons and softball for 16.

   He had a reputation as an "old-school" disciplinarian who also encouraged players, and Maurer was one of the rare multi-sport veteran coaches who wasn't a teacher. He worked at the now-closed Ethan Allen manufacturng plant in Boonville for 34 years.

  
   Coaching changes: Bill Case, who coached girls basketball at Greene for 22 seasons and went 427-131, is moving to Blue Hill, Maine, to teach at George Stevens Academy. He'll be replaced by Dave Gorton, The Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.

   Case had retired from teaching two years ago but found he missed being in the classroom. His teams won four straight sectional titles beginning in 1992 and five overall. He also coached boys soccer from 1988 to 2004.

   "I cried when he told us," rising senior Megan McDermott told the paper. "Most of us broke down in tears and he did too. I loved him as a coach. I owe him everything. Everything I learned about basketball was because of him."

   In Lansing, Bob Brantner gets his first varsity assignment when he takes over as football coach this fall, The Ithaca Journal reported. Longtime coach and AD Ed Redmond left this month to become the football coach and associate principal at Ithaca High.

   Brantner coached Lansing's modified team last season after four years in a similar role at Southern Springs. He inherits a team coming off an 8-2 season and a program which dropped its JV team due to budget issues.

   Extra points: Stan Hartnett, senior co-captain of Connetquot's football and lacrosse team this past year, died yesterday from injuries suffered in a car crash. Harnett, 18, was planning to attend Briarcliffe College this fall. . . . The news just keeps geeting worse for the Syracuse University football program. Churchville-Chili's Averin Collier, who enrolled in January to get a jump on his freshman season, had foot surgery last month and will miss the start of camp, The Post-Standard reported. In addition, basketball recruit James Southerland did not make a qualifying SAT score and will return to prep school in September.
